When I contribute photograph to Commons, I am sharing them with the world - I'm not donating it to anyone or to any specific organisation. As such, I am rather offended and confused by the button that states "Select a media file to donate". Please can this be modified to read "Select a media file to share"? If there is a better place to raise this issue, or to make the change directly, then please let me know. (Note that I have raised this issue on this page before - I'm raising this yet again because it is a particularly irksome misphrasing...) Mike Peel (talk) 19:59, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

There are 2 errors with the forms above, Correct the errors

I am trying to upload 2 files. I have filled out the Title and Description and Date created. I get the error message "There are 2 errors with the forms above. Correc t the errors and try submitting again".

What errors? I can't see anything flagged. I can't see anything out of the ordinary in the text of the title/description. There is no mark-up, just plain text, alphanumerics and standard punctuation (commas, periods, etc) and spaces.

So I am stuck. I don't know what the errors are and I cannot upload the photos which I wanted to illustrate the WP article on Wilston, Queensland. Kerry Raymond (talk) 21:37, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

No way to get from Describe to Use tab after uploading

Went through and uploaded a batch of 8 files. After filling out the required bits and submitting, the wizard is stuck on the "Describe" tab with no way to progress to the "Use" tab. I confirm : I had the same problem a few times since you reduced the possible cases to choose... the choice for Licence is impossible when having to complete the "Other case" - It does NOT accept

The custom license feature is temporarily broken. A fix is sitting in trunk and will be deployed on Tuesday. (We don't like to deploy on Fridays as a matter of principle to avoid accidental breakage without sufficient support staff.) I've temporarily hidden it. "There are 2 errors"

Further to my previous feedback, I have discovered the problem (a system one). I had not added any categories and other information. When I clicked in them, I found that latitude/longitude/altitude had been filled in automatically (presumably extracted from the JPG file) and that the Altitude was flagged as the error in both cases, saying it was non-numeric (it was two numbers seperated by a slash). So I am hoping that just deleting the altitude data will solve the problem. I think there are two problems here. One is that the upload wizard is automating the extraction of data from the JPG even though that data is apparently not in an acceptable format. Second is that the reporting of the error to the user takes place on an area of the upload form that they didn't visit. If the altitude (or similar) is to be flagged as an error, then this error must be propagated onto the main "upload wizard form" against the 'category and other information" to attract the user's attention to a part of the form that the user didn't even know about or use! @Eloquence: Apparently a i18n error (don't know where this need to be corrected... you know: off-wiki...) zh-cn version errors and loads the english tutorial as a fallback. As the user tells us the zh-hans tutorial would be okay. Note: this fallback was also done in MediaWiki:RotateRequest.js: one class: "zh, zh-hans, zh-cn, zh-my, zh-sg", another class: "zh-hant, zh-hk, zh-mo, zh-tw". Note2: the tutorial is available in zh-hans and zh-hant.

Should allow "Enter web address" as a source

Flikr and many other sites contain valid CC media, but you have to save them locally then upload them. An option to enter a URL might help, possibly with a black/whitelist or auto-license checking on major "known" sites FT2 (Talk | email) 10:29, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Public domain means 1) coypright expired 2) too simple for copyright protection or 3) copyright holder waived all copyrights. Did the copyright holder waive all copyrights for this files? If yes, you have to select the apropriate option in the Wizard:
Step 1: "This file is not my own work"
Step 2:"Another reason not mentioned above" and fill {{PD-author|"name of author"}} in the field.
You will be asked to provide written evidence confirming that this is correct and the copyright holder indeed waived all copyrights. But remember, all rights waived (public domain) means all rights waived. Not for profit is not all rights waived and not accepted on Commons, files on Commons are free for commercial reuse.

I am working with the recording artist O'Bryan to update his content. I noticed there is a photo to the album "You And I" listed on a subpage and when similar information has been submitted to update his page that information has been deleted. The photo for the profile page was submitted by O'Bryan himself and the previous album covers would be credited appropriately to EMI, just like the "You And I" photo that was uploaded. Why do you have to keep changing things. How the bloody hell do I know "Another reason not mentioned above" and it asks me then to put in wikitext to say the reason. The reason is fair use of a book cover. It used to have that on the options to select. Don't you realise that people get used to how it works and get frustrated when things are changed? YOU might think it is better but most people learn things and they get frustrated when they change.Why change it when it worked all right and its faults regular contributors had got used to. Or to put it in other words, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I could put it in much harsher words. I am simply trying to improve Wikipedia.

Falls die Datei bereits übertragen wurde, muss man trotzdem die Datei mit einem neuen Namen versuchen zu übertragen. Allerdings wird sie dann doch nicht übertragen, da festgestellt wird, das sie schon vorhanden ist.

I have just uploaded files from the Internet. Metadata say that last edit of the file was in 2011, but the Upload wizard proposed the current date (Jan 7 2012) by default, which does not make much sense. Even without proposing current date by default seems likely to lead to a large number of wrong dates. --Zolo (talk) 07:45, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Should allow "Other information" field

When specifying information for the files, should be able to have a free-form "other information" field. At present anything not strictly covered by the template requires a user to upload, then edit the page (assuming the realise it) and so on. An "Enter any other useful information here" box on the form would help. FT2 (Talk | email) 10:32, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

What kind of 'other information' you refer too? There is an additional information field for templates such as geolocation templates. There is a field for custom licensing. All other information I can imagine - and i've ever seen in my Commons history - is file description or source description and belongs inside the description or source fields. --Martin H.
