Eh? Simplicity is good but lately I haven't been seeing the "Category" box unless I click the option for adding extra information. This is not a good simplification, as categories are very important for finding and handling pictures. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:30, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

I believe the category box was collapsed because new users frequently incorrectly categorized files. Using the category system in the way it's intended (by placing files in the correct part of the hierarchy) is a fairly advanced interaction, and new users attempt to use categories as tags (by essentially using them as tags, inadvertently creating lots of new categories). We could at least remember the collapse/expand state, if that's not done already, so that users can consistently use categorization once they have discovered it..--Eloquence (talk) 16:52, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, I see, so it's basically a choice between policies that produce too many categories or too few. And the background is, our category subsystem was designed for an encyclopedia, not a photo collection, so it lacks the power and versatility of a photo tagging system, so only minor adjustments to procedures are possible until the underlying Wiki software is improved. Thanks for the bad news. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:11, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Upload Hilfe

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:6.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.1

3) Integrierte grafische Einfuehrung in Lizenzfragen.
4) Sinnvolle Standardvorgaben fuer typische Faelle ("eigenes Werk"), ohne dass man durch komplexe Lizenzbaeume navigieren muss.
5) Unterstuetzung fuer Kampagnen wie "Wiki Loves Monuments" (siehe mw:Extension:UploadWizard/Campaigns).
In Arbeit:
1) Mehrfachselektion von Dateien im ersten Schritt.
2) Sichere Uebertragung grosser Dateien durch Aufteilung in kleinere Pakete.
Oft gewuenscht, kommt bald:

Dann könnte man schon offline etwas vorbereiten.

-- Хрюша ?? 17:31, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Hallo Didi,

Ich bin also sehr überrascht.

Category selection became a hidden option???

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:6.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.1

Can the programmers explain why the Category selection became hidden which makes it seem optional? Is there an option in my personal preferences to have this show at all times? I am really curious about the logic of making image categorization a hidden option? Who is going to categorize the images after upload??? All will happen is that you'll be flooding every uploader's mail box with messages about images with missing categories.

I (still) have thousands of images to upload and clicking 10 times for each batch just adds to my workload. Why make one's the work more difficult? Ineuw talk page on en.ws 04:14, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

See #Uncategorized above. Perhaps the category picker can be improved. Now it only makes suggestions based on letters already typed. If, when a category is picked, the wizard showed the parents and children, and perhaps the sibling cats, then newbies might be able to do a better job.

It would be fine to have the opportunity to add categories simultaneously to several pictures at once. LMI Code?

User agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux x86_64; U; de) Presto/2.9.168 Version/11.50

Hi.

During adding metadata to the image (fom romania) I uploaded I am asked for a "LMI Code". There is an explanation for "Categories", there is an explanation for "Date created" - but for "LMI Code" there is no explanation provided.

So I had to go to the IRC to #wikimedia, get redirected to #wikilovesmonuments and find out that there are lists of monuments which are listed for the contest.

a) What happens to people who are not a little related to wikimedia/wikipedia?

b) I was told that the contest runs for monuments, which mostly means castles and other old buildings. On the german site where I started (I am german) monuments is translated with "Denkmal" which can be translated with "monument" and "memorial" as well.

So it is a bit disillusioning to find out the images one collected and wanted to donate most probably don't match some criterias which aren't mentioned on the (german) contest page.

I don't like it very much. Uncomfortable.

I used to prepare all the information before uploading file. Now I have to go through several pages and options (some of them hidden by default) to prepare good description.

This thing is like windows network wizard or something similar - go through 5 pages and maybe you will get what you want. I hope that old form will still be available. Jakubhal (talk) 18:07, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

I uploaded a file using the UploadWizard, and I am very disappointed that there wasn't a field for adding categories. This might be a useful tool for first-timers, but for those who have uploaded files a couple of times already, it is just too time-consuming. V85 (talk) 08:32, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

I uploaded about 4000 pictures by the old form and became pretty well accustomed to it. The new wizard took awhile to become familiar but after the first hundred I came to prefer it, mainly because of the ease of uploading half a dozen files as a batch.
The main remaining irritation for me is categories. Newbies won't know they should click to put in "additional" information including cats. When I paste categories into the description, a bot later complains that the file is uncategorized even though the category system recognizes it. When I use the "additional" option, the picker is case sensitive. As a minor additional irritation, the resulting entry in the file description shows underscores instead of spaces. After becoming accustomed to these difficulties of the new method, I prefer it to the difficulties of the old, but there is surely room for improvement. Finally! Thank you all...

User agent: Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1; U; ru) Presto/2.9.168 Version/11.50

Finally i can upload five or ten images an the one moment! It's so easy to add the descriptions not one-by-one to the serie of pictures (i usually make some pics at the social and political meetings or travelling) but all in one mon\ment, copy-pasting one main phrase and than just adding the comments to the name of the file!

Also it's perfect that there's no need anymore to change the names of the image you upload avoiding missing the change - now system just "pushing" you to change the abracadabra like "IMG45817" to normal one. Zac allan (talk) 17:53, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

NVO (talk) 14:44, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

In response to a discussion on Swedish Wikipedia about the fairly complicated procedure with permission handling for files where the uploader is not the copyright holder, I submit this proposal to simplify the process in the hope that it will increase the donations of media files to Commons:

  • In the step "Release rights", under the choice "This file is not my own work.", under "Now tell us why you are sure this site has the right to publish this work:", there should also be a choice "The copyright holder of this work has expressed their wish to release it under a free license" with the same licence choices as under "The copyright holder published this work with the right Creative Commons license", but with an additional free-text-field for an e-mail adress to the copyright holder and eventually also a drop-down menu with language options.
  • The file should then be uploaded and its page automatically tagged with "pending permission".
  • An e-mail should automatically be sent to the copyright holder with information, in the selected language, that the file is uploaded to Commons and with a URL to a "contract page", unique for the file in question and "impossible" to guess, where the copyright holder can see the file and accept or decline the licence chosen by the uploader (or via a drop-down menu change licence before accepting).
    • If the copyright holder declines, or fail to accept within a specified time (a week?), the file should automatically be deleted and uploader informed.
    • If the copyright holder accepts the licence the copyright holder's e-mail address should automatically be stored in a ticket in OTRS and the file should automatically be tagged with the licence accepted and the ticket number from OTRS.

It should be made clear to the uploader that this feature should be used only when the uploader and copyright holder already has an agreement, and not for soliciting new material. Any comments/suggestions to this proposal (especially the "automatically"-markers) are welcome! You may also move or copy it if you think it better belongs somewhere else. --Bensin (talk) 21:31, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

The tickets should still be checked manually, as it is easy to fill in a self-registered e-mail address. If the address does not seem "official" or there are other problems, the issues should be dealt with in a few days, not after years when somebody finds the image suspicious and checks the ticket.
Otherwise I think this would be very nice.

Feature and improvement requests

General interface

  • Just a small suggestion: it would be nice if the help tooltips (from the [?] signs) would disappear if we clicked anywhere on the page, not necessarily on the icons. This already happens with the calendar. --Waldir talk 22:34, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
  • When I uploaded an svg file, the continue button didn't work. I am using Firefox 4 on Windows 7 in Chinese. Caiguanhao (talk) 11:37, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
  • browser back-button forgets about already done upload. I did a back to lookup the necessary license of the original. Upload lost? Non information about the current state. I want to be redirected to the state in the upload process I was in before. Herzi Pinki (talk) 20:43, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Remove the horizontal line. Make the "next" button on the "learn" page more visible. See hilight of a few remaining interaction design issues for details. Dodoïste (talk) 16:53, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
  • There's a nice principle in usability design which says that users shouldn't feel trapped. The interface should give them enough options, but afford them the possibility of changing their minds if necessary. Long story short, the uploader needs a Back button. Thanks for this very nice work! Ocaasi (talk) 18:39, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
I wouldn't have said it this way, but I agree with Ocaasi's idea. I strongly expected the steps ("learn", "upload"...) to be clickable, and in fact tried it several times. Not because I needed them badly for the precise task I was doing, but because I felt like it would be clickable. Also, newbies may want to go back to the "learn" step when they are at the "Release rights" step.
"Affordance" doesn't seem to be the right word there, because the 5 steps doesn't look clickable. But the user may be used to click it. Dodoïste (talk) 00:15, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
I agree with the above. I also think a preview displayed at the end of the wizard, giving the user a chance to review and correct the final output, wouldn't be a bad idea. Currently the uploader doesn't see the description page they've created even once if they don't remember to go there themselves. It can be an optional step if you think it would be too intimidating to newbies. Lampak (talk) 09:28, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
  • Froze up on Screen One (the one with Dizzney-style comics). No matter how I press "Upload" it just froze there. Again and again. And don't tell me "you had to scroll two screens down, and find a pale grey button below this wall of highly educational graphics." Nein. Everything must fit on one screen, especially when "everything" is a single button. Usability 101. NVO (talk) 17:27, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Tutorial

File selection

  • Since it supports multiple files, it would be great if we could select multiple files directly in the select file dialog. Otherwise it is still very cumpersome to upload more than a few files --Waldir talk 22:34, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
    • Being able to add multiple files to the upload in one go, would be awesome, instead of having to click the link, select the file, select "Open", then rinse and repeat. -- saberwyn 03:49, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Regarding my general feedback to the Wizard - it would be nice being able to add more files via the MS Windows dialog bog "Select file" after clicking "Select a media file to upload". Uploading multiple files is not user friendly. There is a question of file spam of course, there could be a reasonable limit for lets say 20 files. Also, there definitely should be a "review" page creatina extra step between "Describe" and "Use" - user could correct possible errors within description etc. A review (or check) is an important part of any workflow. --Kozuch (talk) 15:00, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
It's not a deliberate omission -- we're getting a wizard that works with all browsers first, including old IEs and Firefox, and they can only do one at a time. The code is architected so we can do multiple uploads like that... hope I can get to it. As for reviewing stuff, well, I'm not sure it makes sense for an individual. 90% of the time it will just slow people down. The idea of a holding area for files that admins can access has been kicking around for 2 years now though, and although the WMF isn't allocating resources to it right now someone should do it. NeilK (talk) 21:33, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Upload

  • Adding a way to cancel or remove an image following the 'pre-upload' but before the image is uploaded with description to Commons would be good in case people accidently add multiple copies of the same image to the queue, or decide during the process that they don't want to continue on with a certain photo but not have to cancel out and lose all the other images in the batch -- saberwyn 03:49, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
    • There should be a way to discard individual files, if they are no longer wanted during the wizard. Also, it's not clear how to cancel the whole wizard. Does just leaving the page delete the files from the server (Are they purged automatically)? Nerd65536 (talk) 03:05, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
  • A warning about a filename conflict appears only on the Describe step. Is it better for it to appear right after the user uploads the image, to avoid wasted effort on Release rights step? Cmglee (talk) 12:05, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Upon uploading an image with an EXIF rotation tag, it would be great to offer automatic rotation to the correct orientation. --MichaelBueker (talk) 17:31, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
  • There should be button "stop". Akamai (talk) 20:57, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Licensing

  • When picking my licensing option, I was not able to select a website for the attribution. Also, I was not able to pick a country for the licensing, so it remained as unported. Apart from that, it seems a lot better then the previous method of uploading images. QFSE Media (talk) 22:33, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Hi. I want to put the author as a link to give credit to someone on Picasa and the 50 characters limit prevents to do that. You should consider changing it. Otherwise I love it. Benoit. Badzil (talk) 20:12, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. As for Picasa, I'm not sure I understand why you had that problem. Is their name really longer than 50 characters? Or were you trying to use a link to Picasa as the author? Anyway we can raise this, but what were you trying to enter? NeilK (talk) 04:27, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
I was trying to enter this: [https://picasaweb.google.com/cotevaroise.com cotevaroise.com] (cotevaroise.com is the name associated with the Picasa account). This is similar to the Flickr upload which links to the Flickr account of the author of the picture. Thanks. Badzil (talk) 18:31, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

  • I am unable to specify that I want to use the CC 2.5 license, in which wikinews requires. Phearson (talk) 14:49, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
I don't see any requirement for images to be CC 2.5 on Wikinews. In a few minutes I was able to find PD, US government work, and CC 3.0 licensed images. Actually, I was not able to find a CC 2.5 image. The link to upload images on Wikinews goes straight to Commons:Upload. NeilK (talk) 04:36, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
  • The phrase "Release rights", though 'verbed' as the other headings are, is somewhat misleading. I think a novice uploader could be scared away by the phrase, as it sounds like he/she is releasing all their rights (many people aren't okay with that). Of course, in the case of many free licenses the creator of the work still retains some rights even after uploading. And that doesn't even cover the myriad uploads where the uploader isn't in a position to release rights at all, as they aren't the creator of the work. A more friendly and accurate heading might be "Explain source" or "License work" (maybe not great suggestions, but that's 30 seconds of thinking!) Gump Stump (talk) 06:22, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
  • My complaint is that the wizard does not allow users to select their own license (other than the three) or use their own license template. A button to let a user do that would be very nice. Mikemoral♪♫ 22:39, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
  • Why the recomended licence is CC-BY-SA, not public domain? The aim of Commons is releasing files, so we should encourage to release as more as possible and not to limit files by useless specifing the author who is usually de facto anonymous and who has no profits from it. And why there is CC-0 instead of just shorter and simplier written PD-self? Akamai (talk) 20:57, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Manually inserting licensing templates

  • There should be a way to manually insert licensing templates. I don't expect to see every one on the list, but if the list of options doesn't cover the one we need I would still like to move forward with the upload. As is, I simply select the wrong one and change it after it's uploaded. Not very efficient. Other than that, the upload wizard is a huge improvement and it's very easy to use. Swarm (talk) 21:19, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments -- I agree with you. This affects a small number of uploaders but they tend to be the most active. I have something half-ready to go, but I want to make sure it doesn't impede overall usability. NeilK (talk) 21:28, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
  • This is an issue for me, as most of my uploads are historic photos with a PD-NZ licence, and I'd like to enter that manually rather than choose the wrong licence and then amend the uploaded file later. Schwede66 01:06, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Agree completely. I was uploading images last night that were tagged {{PD-Canada}} and {{PD-1996}} and I had no choice but to upload them with an incorrect license and then go back and manually fix them. Some people won't even bother with the manual fix. There needs to an option to manually enter a license, as the current options are unhelpful and overly U.S.-centric. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 17:19, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
There are lots of custom licenses for different websites (like Comunismul în România). I want to be able to use those for uploading. NeilK, have you made any progress on that issue? Strainu (talk) 09:01, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
I was wondering about the status of this as well. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 17:53, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
  • There is required too short description of the source like this: "This field is too long. Make it shorter than 200 characters." Make the size of this field unlimited. Snek01 (talk) 18:36, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Description and categories

  • I'm liking the ability to click on the images while in the "Describe" tab for a larger view. However, I missed it on my first pass and think this should be advertised with a "click to enlarge" label on/near each image. -- saberwyn 03:49, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
  • The system seems to assume you know every bit of information about the picture you are about to upload. If you know that a picture was taken in february 1994, you want to include that as the date but you only have the option to give a precise date. Yaamboo (talk) 09:29, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

The thumbnail view of what is being uploaded is quite unsatistactory : you just cannot tell if the details are right. Adding categories not possible

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; rv:6.0.2) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.2

I find it an extreme serious problem that there is no possibility to add categories!!!!!!! That means that all uploaded images come in the category "media needing categories". The user gets probably immediately a message on the talk page that categories are missing. Very confusing because he/she thought that using the wizard would avoid problems. For lazy people it is fine because others have to do the difficult job. Wouter (talk) 06:13, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

The input field to add a category is hidden. You have to click "more options..." first. But you can skip this as it's not required. I also find this confusing as pointed out below.

Not usable at all due to security errors and other exceptions

See my old lists of bugs and hints (1 to 28 and 29 to 31). Since I tested this wizard first almost a year ago almost no issues are fixed. The wizard contains major bugs and is impossible to use. I really don't understand why such a collection of erroneous, useless lines of code are on Commons. This is what I tried today and why I failed (again, as I failed a year ago and half a year ago).

  1. The link to the help desk is obfuscated in the image and nearly impossible to find. It does not look like it can be clicked.
  2. The German translation for the “Next” button is wrong, please use “Nächster Schritt” or “Weiter”.
  3. Please add the possibility to click on the tabs on top of the page, e.g. to skip some of the steps very fast without searching for the “Next” buttons somewhere else on the page.
  4. A link to this feedback page is missing.
  5. The wizard on the prototype wiki is broken.
  6. When switching to the mobile view there is only a loading animation but nothing happens.
  7. In the current Opera 11.51 the wizard is completely useless due to a security exception when I press the upload button in the second step:

I didn't had any of these problems an hour ago, using the Chrome v13 and Win Vista. Is the system perhaps somehow incompatible with your computer? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jim.henderson (talk • contribs) 12:44, 15. Sep. 2011 (UTC)
I don't encounter any of the above error messages on the upload step; tested Opera 11.51 on both Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit and Mac OS X 10.6.8. --brion (talk) 18:43, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
As I said this happens with the current Opera version. I forgot to tell you this happened when I was in a local network behind a proxy/firewall. There is no problem with all the other upload forms, only with this strange wizard. Don't tell me I should use the other form if I'm behind a proxy/firewall. I know this. What I'm saying is: If this is going to be the default upload form for all (inexperienced) users it must work in all cases, even behind a proxy/firewall. --TMg 18:49, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
In any case you might get rid of the last one by fixing your own User:TMg/vector.js. You might use if (window.UploadFormBasic) instead of just if (UploadFormBasic). Or use if (typeof UploadFormBasic != 'undefined') ... Both should properly avoid the error message about UploadFormBasic being undefined. Lupo 20:24, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
I hope these problems can be fixed soon. I also hope the new wizard will meanwhile remain available rather than be removed, as it saves much time for many of us. Some parts that are working are still in a rough, unfinished state, for example Category picking and upload progress bar, but the easy ability to send several files at once is a pleasant feature which I would not want to lose. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:16, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
The undefined variable was my fault. I'm sorry. About the security exception: Today I tried again and can not reproduce. Did you change something since yesterday? About the wizard on the prototype wiki: Could you please fix it? I want to test without uploading garbage to Commons. --TMg 10:00, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi TMg -- your characterization is obviously not one I agree with. UW has been used to upload more than 250,000 files, has passed through more than 10 iterations of user testing, and dozens of bugs have been uncovered and fixed since your last report. Indeed, you're primarily raising minor issues at this point. They may be very annoying issues, in which case I hope you're also motivated to help fix them. :-)

In response to the specific points you've raised:

1) Link in the tutorial: Since the licensing tutorial is an SVG file, I would encourage you to tweak it if you think the link should be highlighted more. Here's a link to the German version.

2) German i18n: In general, i18n is also done by the community via translatewiki for all software, and translation issues are nothing unusual. They can be fixed as in all other products by updating the translation at its source. Since this was a simple tweak, I just fixed this one. But if you see i18n issues in software, please just fix them in translateiwki.

3) Clicking tabs: This is not trivial due to state changes throughout the process, nor is it necessarily desirable, nor has it surfaced as a major actual interaction issue in UX tests. What does happen is that users try to recover from choices that are currently unrecoverable. For example, you can't correct the initial selection of files. IMO, we should focus on making the most common of those issues recoverable, instead of altering the entire workflow. With that said, this issue is discussed in some more detail in bug 27423.

4) Link to the feedback page: The link exists in the pop-up that allows you to provide feedback. That said, we should have a "Thanks for your feedback" pop-up that contains the link again for easy copy and pasting, as this is definitely easy to miss. I've added a bug for this, bug 30495.

5) Mobile view: The "mobile view" does not exist for most MediaWiki software features yet, UW is no exception. I've filed this as bug 30943.

6) Let me know if you're able to reproduce the Opera issue.

7) Prototype: You're using an old URL, please use this one for testing. You can also check out the UploadWizard extension and get involved in development.

Thanks, --Eloquence (talk) 01:28, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your patience. Please excuse me for being so angry. As I said in my previous posts I would like to recommend the wizard to all not so experienced users. But every time I tried to use the wizard it simply stops working for one or another reason. I would not call this a "minor issue". The worst thing is, it simply stops and I'm stuck. There never was a recovery, e.g. an explanation and a link back to a classic upload form. That's what I expect in worst case scenarios like switching to the mobile view. That's why I posted this. Some of my issues have no use, it simply are worst case scenarios. If you get it to do something useful in these border cases it will also help a lot in other minor cases.
  1. There is no link in the SVG. The obfuscation in an image map is done in PHP. I simply ask why you hide the link in an image instead of adding a link to the page? You say the wizard is about being user friendly and accessible. Hiding a link where nobody expect it is the opposite.
  2. I tried but it's confusing because there are multiple "Next" messages, it's impossible to tell the difference without looking at the source and a bot edited the messages for an unknown reason. I find this very confusing. Now I understand why nobody fixed this since I reported it a year ago.
  3. The resulting wikitext is not nice. Spaces (e.g. == {{int:filedesc}} ==) and line breaks (each language and category on the next line please) are missing.
  4. Multiple languages should be ordered alphabetically in the resulting wiki text.
  5. There was no link. I tried to fix it.
  6. Please delete the broken script. It's confusing (again).
  7. Wasn't there a progress bar when uploading files? I almost never see it, except for one time when I tried to upload a small and a big file. Then the progress bar was shown for a short time after the small file was finished and the second was still being uploaded. In all other cases it was not visible, e.g. when uploading a single file.
  8. When clicking a thumbnail the preview window is always shown with scrollbars, except for very small images (tested in Opera).
  9. When I upload a broken file (e.g. a text file renamed to *.png) it is rejected (correct) but then there is no hint how to solve this except for retrying (which is pretty useless, if the file was rejected the first time it will be rejected always). I know it was possible to remove files. The [×] icon is missing.
  10. The [×] is also missing if I add multiple files and want to remove one I added by accident.
  11. It's possible to click the filename to replace a file but this function is completely hidden (at least in Opera). No hover effect. Mouse cursor does not change. No title text.
  12. When I replace a file the filename is replaced but the thumbnail is not (maybe Opera only, but that's what I use). It shows the wrong thumbnail the whole time, even in the last step. But it uploaded the right file.
  13. I can even replace files while the upload is in progress. It drops the old file and uploads the new as I would expect. But only if there is time. If the upload finishes while I select the new file the first file is used and the new is ignored. I think this is confusing. I suggest to not allow replacing a file while it is uploaded.
  14. When playing around with replacing a file in step 2 sometimes I see multiple thumbnails in step 3 but in step 4 there is only one file again (as I expected). Here is how to reproduce this: Try to upload a file that is already uploaded. It is rejected (correct). Replace it by clicking the filename (you will see the wrong thumbnail as described above). Upload. Go to step 3. You will see two thumbnails (both wrong). In step 4 there is only one thumbnail (this time it's the right one).
  15. I think adding at least a single category is very important. But this is hidden in step 4 in a "more options" link. Why? If the user skips this (it's not required to add a category) it adds a strange error message to the page. Why? If it's required, why not force the user to choose a category. But if it's not required, why adding an error message to the page?
  16. I added a category by typing something. The category did not existed but there was no error message. What I typed simply was ignored. I don't think this is a good solution. Show an error message or put the text the user entered somewhere on the page (e.g. to the "other information" text) so an other user can use the information to choose a proper category. PS: This is the same confusing behavior that is reported multiple times on this pages. I typed something and simply clicked "Next" without pressing the "Add" button first. I wanted to add a single category so there was no need to "Add" a second one. I typed my single category to the text field and pressed "Next". It was dropped. This is bad. All other fields (description, date and so on) behave the same except for this one. What's displayed in all other fields is submitted with the "Next" button. From what I see the solution is very, very simple: If "Next" is pressed and there is something in the category field make the script click the "Add" button instead and cancel clicking the "Next" button. That's all. The "Add" button will do the rest.

I think I'm an experienced user. Every time I stumble upon such an usability issue I know all the less experienced people out there will stumble upon the same issue over and over again. It is so simple: If I enter something in a text field and press a button ("Next" in this case) what I entered should not be ignored! What can we do to fix this bad behavior?

Thanks Saibo. I tried to find the "more options" heading. In which part of the upload process is this presented and where? I use the Dutch version. Wouter (talk) 07:11, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
I found it under "meer instellingen" (= more settings). May be to add "(categories and additional info)" to make clear what the "more options" involve. Wouter (talk) 10:32, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Same problem here and here and here and here and here and here and ... I think you get it. And that's only the users who noted they forgot something and reported it here. Somebody said 25 % of the uploads done with the wizard are missing categories. Please force the user to add a category. Or at least make the input field permanently visible and let it optional if it should be for a good reason. Thanks. What I did for now is changing the German message as suggested. This should be done for all languages. --TMg 23:59, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

  • What's the point of forcing categories if the wizard cannot process them anyway, and if the uploader or someone else must fix them afterwards? Tell me thay I'm dumb, why didn't it work, ever? NVO (talk) 10:25, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you are talking about. Currently there are three problems with the categories:
  1. The category field is hidden. People do not see it. Even if they want to add categories they forget it because there is no hint in the wizard. The only thing you see is the text "more options".
  2. If you enter something in the input field for the category and press "Next" without pressing "Add" first what you entered is completely ignored. I think this is a major issue as described above.
  3. I think it should be required to enter at least a single category. But there are good reasons to not do this. However, the first two issues should be fixed.
Please comment and vote for the bug 28850. --TMg 11:02, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

More licenses needed

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0

More alternatives for licensing are needed. I usually use PD-Sweden-photo and want to have access to that template. It would be best if the form would be customizable.

Creator is preferable as field name rather than author, since it describes artists and photographers better.

When I uploaded another image from the same source, I had to type the source all over. Formerly, the computer remembered what I had written earlier and suggested a source (or other variables) after I gave a letter. Also, I now have to add another language manually, instead of having Swedish and English preselected.

I uploaded an image today, but there was no option to add Categories. Is this possible, or did I overlook it? Wiki-uk (talk) 15:42, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

It's under the "more options" heading which has to be expanded:

--Eloquence (talk) 16:54, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Is it really a good idea to hide categorizing in this way? I would rather suggest that the wizard doesn't accept uploads without categories... Gestumblindi (talk) 15:11, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
The problem is that a hierarchical category system, which is also English-only, can be very hard for new users to understand. With the category system we have today, broken as it is, categorization is realistically something that's either done by advanced users, or that's implicit in the transaction somehow (e.g. the Wiki Loves Monuments uploads add some relevant cats). How could you expect a Japanese speaker with no grasp of English to choose a correct English category name as a mandatory part of the upload process?
With that said, if the community would prefer frequently incorrect categorization of uploads by new users to no categorization, then it's easy to at least change the default state back to expanded. This is really a question that can best be answered by the people in the community who are very active fixing/updating categories.--Eloquence (talk) 00:44, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes. I mostly deal with pictures of my own small island, many of them from tourists who only understand that they are in New York, which is a very much larger area, yet sometimes they are mistaken and the picture is of New Jersey. So, Category:New York becomes crowded with files that must be diffused or otherwise moved. This is a nuisance but not as bad as having a good picture uncategorized with little hope of ever being found. Jim.henderson (talk) 11:57, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
What I would prefer is that the user puts the image in the category of the country where the photo has been taken (or better even more specific province or city). Where it has been taken is often very difficult to see from the image. An other option for the unexperienced users is to put it in some of the main categories as given in Category:Topics. That can be given as an option list to mark what is most suitable. I would prefer that above a really wrong category. Wouter (talk) 12:22, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
That's sort of a start; it's 22 categories. Problem is, it's both too few and too many. This long list is bigger than the whole wizard page already is, and will confuse the beginner, yet the categories are so few and broad that as they quickly expand there will be little hope of diffusing them.
These problems could be addressed by a tree presentation, in which the user is shown a list of half a dozen. Pick one, and up comes a list of five to ten subcats, each leading to another list and so on. This however is probably a fairly big programming job, made bigger by the need to provide multiple language versions in the top several layers, after which we would get down to the English names in the lower levels, and presumably this preliminary breakdown would help in further diffusion by topical and local experts. Whether our industrious and compassionate developers have the resources to produce a workable version anytime soon, I have more doubt than knowledge.
If a tree scheme or something more sophisticated cannot soon be developed, I would choose a method that will produce many categorizations too high in the tree and somewhat fewer plain wrong, in preference to the current method that will leave similarly large numbers of contributions simply uncategorized. For me, it's caused a lot of trouble that the categories were moved off the top level and down under "more options" - they are essentially required, and need to be up where one remembers them every time!

I can understand why the wizard might not have lasted as the default upload - but couldn't it at least be a clickable option on the first rather than the second screen? For my uses, it's been great.

Dcrjsr (talk) 02:30, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
The issue is discussed a bit further up, see #Option to add Categories missing. I agree we'll need to make a decision on that soon.
UploadWizard is currently the default uploader on Commons; can you clarify what path you're using to upload files where you're not getting it? Perhaps you've activated the "Disable UploadWizard" gadget? Thanks, --Eloquence (talk) 19:20, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
The very confusing "more options..." has recently been changed to "add categories and more information...". Wouter (talk) 19:42, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

It is already integrated, just not immediately. DschwenBot extracts GPS EXIF data and converts it to {{Location}}, daily, for all uploads, not just those using the wizard. Gestumblindi (talk) 20:22, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
It must be integrated immediately. Scrawler (talk) 16:25, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

I wouldn't say that a bot that may eventually do a thing is "integrated" with the upload process. More important, it is neither immediate nor reliable. It often delays for several days after an upload; sometimes it misses a file, and right now the bot hasn't run for ten days. Better if we could know immediately whether the geotagging process has succeeded, though I appreciate that our industrious developers are working on other issues that may rank ahead of this one. derivative work once more

I was very confused by this new tool. Until now I had uploaded a few pictures, all without any great problems. I could chose from various possibilities like "own work, "work from Flickr" and "derivative work" (don't know the exact expressions), and I found what I needed. Now I couldn't find the possibility to upload derivative works, thought it wasn't provided any more, it is not offered in this new tool and not linked to anywhere. I had to read this discussion page to find out it still exist in some hidden place. I think the relation between original pictures and derivatives can easily get lost now, because I used the new form (didn't know there were still other tools somewhere) and later edited the description to inform about the relation to the other file. But maybe other users won't ad this necessary information like I did and so it will be missing. I like the simple graphical explanation about rightful uploading at the beginning of the tool, though. But derivatives could and should be included, because even new users (as I was one recently) may want to upload details of existing pictures, let's say people, portraits, that's a basic thing, I think.--Miss-Sophie (talk) 15:17, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
