Políticas e normas sobre candidatas a imaxes destacadas

[edit]

Regras xerais

[edit]
  1. After the end of the voting period the result will be determined on day 15 after nomination (shown in the time-table below). So the voting period is two weeks (plus the hours until the end of day 14). Votes added on day 15 or after are not counted.
  2. Nominations by anonymous contributors are welcome
  3. Contributions to discussion by anonymous contributors are welcome
  4. Votes by anonymous contributors aren't counted
  5. Nominations do not count as votes. Support must be explicitly stated.
  6. Nominators can withdraw their nominated pictures at any time. This is done by simply writing "I withdraw my nomination".
  7. Remember, the goal of the Wikimedia Commons project is to provide a central repository for free images to be used by all Wikimedia projects, including possible future projects. This is not simply a depository for Wikipedia images, so images should not be judged here on their suitability for that project.
  8. Pictures can be taken from the list if they have no support (not counting the nominator's) on day number 7 (day of nomination + 7).

Regras para as imaxes candidatas

[edit]

What to do after voting is finished.

[edit]

Over time, featured picture standards change. It may be decided that for some pictures which were formerly "good enough", this is no longer the case. This is for listing an image which you believe no longer deserves to be a featured picture. These require 2/3 majority (and a minimum of 5 votes) agreeing to delist from featured pictures. If there is not 2/3 agreeing to delist it, it stays as a featured picture. For these, vote {{Keep}}  Keep (it deserves to be a featured picture) or {{Delist}}  Delist (it doesn't deserve to be a featured picture). Please provide a link to the original FP nomination (it will appear under "Links" on the image description page). Otherwise the same rules as above apply. Please use this link to add a new removal candidate.

Guidelines for nominators

[edit]

Below you can find some informal rules picture should match:

  • Resolution - graphics located on Commons may be used not only for viewing them on a screen. They may be also used for printing or for viewing on very high resolution monitors. We can't predict what devices would be used in the future neither, so it is important that pictures being nominated have a resolution as high as possible. A resolution of at least 2 million pixel (e.g. 2000 x 1000) seems reasonable right now.
  • Focus - every important object on the picture should be sharp.
  • Foreground and background - foreground and background objects may be pretty distracting. You should check if something in front of the subject doesn't hide some important elements and if something in background doesn't spoil the composition (for example if the streetlight doesn't "stand" on someone's head).
  • General quality - pictures being nominated should have good technical quality.
  • Value - our main goal is to feature most valuable pictures from all others. Pictures should be in some way special, so please be aware that:
    • almost all sunsets are pretty, and most of such pictures are not different in the essence from others,
    • nightshots are pretty but normally more details can be shown on pictures taken at daytime,
    • beautiful does not always mean valuable.

Not every rule has to be matched, e.g. a picture may have a low resolution, because higher resolution photos cannot be taken (subject may be dead), or the event is not going to occur again.

Guidelines for Evaluating Photographs

[edit]

There are several criteria for evaluating images.

On the technical side, we have exposure, composition, movement control and depth of field.

Exposure refers to the shutter diaphragm combination that renders an image with a tonal curve that ideally is able to represent in acceptable detail shadows and highlights within the image. This is called latitude. Images can be on the low side of the tonal curve (low range), the middle (middle range) or high side (upper range). Digital cameras (or images) have a narrower latitude than film. Lack of shadow detail is not necessarily a negative characteristic. In fact, it can be part of the desired effect. Burned highlights in large areas are a distracting element.

Composition refers to the arrangement of the elements within the image. The “Rule of Thirds” is a good guideline for composition and is an inheritance from the painting school. The idea is to divide the image with two imaginary horizontal and two vertical lines, thus dividing the image into thirds horizontally and vertically. Centering the subject is almost always considered a negative practice. Subjects of interest are placed in one of the “interest points”, where horizontal and vertical lines intersect (4 interest points are created). Horizons are never places in the middle, for they “cut” the image in half. They are placed either in the upper or lower horizontal line. Main idea here is NOT to center subject.

Movement control refers to the manner in which motion is represented in the image. Motion can be frozen or blurred. Neither one is better over the other. It is the intention of representation. Movement is relative within the objects of the image. For example, photographing a race car that appears frozen in relation to the background does not give us a sense of speed or motion, so technique dictates to represent the car in a frozen manner but with a blurred background, thus creating the sense of motion, this is called "panning". On the other hand, representing a basketball player in a high jump frozen in relation to everything else, due to the “unnatural” nature of the pose would be a good photograph.

Depth of field (DOF) refers to the area in focus in front of and beyond main subject. Depth of field is chosen according to the specific needs of every picture. Large or small DOF can either way add or subtract to the quality of the image. Low depth of field can be used to bring attention to the main subject, separating it from the general environment. High depth of field can be used to emphasize space. Short focal length lenses (wide angles) yield large DOF, and viceversa, long focal lenses (telephotos) have shallow DOF. Small apertures yield large DOF and conversely, large apertures yield shallow DOF.

On the graphic elements we have shape, volume, color, texture, perspective, balance, proportion, etc.

Shape refers to the contour of the main subjects.

Volume refers to the three dimensional quality of the object. This is accomplished using side light. Contrary to general belief, front lighting is not the best light. It tends to flatten subject. Best light of day is early morning or late afternoon.

Color is important. Over saturated colours are not good.

Texture refers to the quality of the surface of the subject. It is enhanced by side lighting… it is the “feel” to the touch….

Perspective refers to the “angle” accompanied by lines that disappear into a vanishing point that may or may not be inside the image.

Balance refers to the arrangement of subjects within the image that can either give equal weight or appear to be heavier on one side.

Proportion refers to the relation of size of objects in picture. Generally, we tend to represent small objects small in relation to others, but a good technique is to represent small objects large contrary to natural size relationship. For example, a small flower is given preponderance over a large mountain…. This is called inversion of scales.

Not all elements must be present. Some photographs can be judged on individual characteristics, that is, an image can be about color or texture, or color AND texture, etc.

Symbolic meaning or relevance…. Well, this is where opinion wars start…. A bad picture of a very difficult subject is a better picture than a good picture of an ordinary subject. A good picture of a difficult subject is an extraordinary photograph.

Images can be culturally biased by the photograher and/or the observer. The meaning of the image should be judged according to the cultural context of the image, not by the cultural context of the observer. An image “speaks” to people, and it has the capacity to evoke emotion such as tenderness, rage, rejection, hapiness, sadness, etc. Good photographs are not limited to evoking pleasant sensations….

Above all, Be polite

[edit]

Please don't forget that the image you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone elses. Choose your words with care.

Happy judging… and remember.... all rules can be broken

  • You have created a beautiful map, but unfortunately a mobile phone is not the best way to digitize such a work for FP, since it creates very sharp contrasts and artifacts that are ruining you work and the resolution is also rather low. If you have something flat like this, it's often better to use a scanner with high resolution so that the details can be appreciated. Also the long text here should be on the file page, not the nomination. An explanation like that should be where people can find it easily and read it. This nom will be archived in a week or so and almost no one will see it. Did you write the text yourself, or did you use AI/ChatGPT or something? WildMouse76, you should listen to your better angels. ;-) The phrase 'Keep' has been turned into text instead of the blue dot, since it is a voting symbol and shouldn't be used in other cases. It may screw up the counting for FPC Bot. --Cart (talk) 21:14, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WildMouse76, these are two separate things. In the deletion request, we're discussing ways to prevent Commons from passively enabling copyleft trolling, and the two proposed solutions (deletion and forced watermarking) have serious side-effects that need to be considered. Here, there's no side-effect to not promoting a couple of 10 year-old pictures of common bids. On the other hand, by promoting them we'll be actively helping companies such as Pixsy (and the photographers that engage their services) in extorting users by exploiting a loophole in Creative Commons licences. Julesvernex2 (talk) 08:34, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please see my comment here. I don't have a problem with Commons FP voters opposing and linking to the DR but it is completely unacceptable on a WMF platform to make potentially libellous claims about illegal activity by named individuals ("extortion" is a crime, not a word to be casually flung about in writing). I know that on Twitter people can't help making a point without reminding the universe how horrible the horrible people are, but we're here to review which are our finest pictures. To the extent that licensing enforcement becomes an concern for that, we need to be restrained in our remarks. I hope that is clear, but if not please discuss on the DR. -- Colin (talk) 16:40, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Top part of the California State Capitol, Sacramento
  • Thank you very much, Terragio67. My aim was to capture all the details of the white facade's structures in the bright light and contrast them well against a dark blue sky. A narrower aperture and longer exposure resulted in blown highlights and less detail on the white facade. In addition, I didn't have a tripod with me at the time. I took quite a few shots of this detail also at other ISO settings. But there are only three left because I deleted the most useless ones. Best, -- Radomianin (talk) 05:05, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The light has its charm: nice coloration by the evening light of the summer sun, too bad about the cut off left corner, dllu. I was just wondering why I hadn't seen this pretty shot in the category before, until I realized that you had just uploaded it yesterday :) -- Radomianin (talk) 05:08, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks to Iifar for spotting the flaws that I also missed, and thanks to Rhododendrites for the fixes that have improved the image. Unfortunately there are blue edge repetitions below the wings in many places. They resemble chromatic aberration, but apparently are not. Maybe you can do something about that.
