Javascript for nominating images for deletion

[edit]

I had a go at it. You can see my attempt on User:Jitse Niesen/monobook.js. To try it out, copy it to User:Pfctdayelise. You will get an extra link for nominating the picture for deletion in the toolbox if you are on an image page (I haven't done speedy yet). Let me know what you think of it. Please use en:User talk:Jitse Niesen, as I'm not here very often.

There was a small en:Koninginnedag celebration at Fed Square today; quite funny. :) See you, Jitse Niesen 11:53, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is an error in the bit of your monobook.js that was already there before you added my stuff. It's somewhere around line 10.
var pagetitleRe=/[^:]*:\/\/en\.wikipedia\.org\/(wiki\/|w\/index\.php\?title=)([^&?#]*)/;
ptitle = pagetitleRe.exec(decodeURI(window.location.href))[2].split('_').join(' ');
The regular expression should probably be adapted for commons (replace "en\.wikipedia\.org" by "commons\.wikimedia\.org"). Anyway, this error halts the JavaScript interpreter, so nothing after it gets processed, which is why you don't see the new link. Either fix the error, and any other errors in that piece of code, or remove it altogether.
In Firefox, JavaScript errors are reported on the JavaScript Console, in the Tools menu. I always start there when it doesn't work as expected. -- Jitse Niesen 12:56, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Now I have the link, but it dies because it can't find the uploader ("#2")." — that's probably my fault. What page were you trying it on? -- Jitse Niesen 13:13, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It works for me ... strange ... I need to go to sleep now; I'll think about it tomorrow. -- Jitse Niesen 13:37, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The difference is that you are an admin here. The "delete" links that you get confuse the script. I'll fix it soon. -- Jitse Niesen 02:23, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I finally got around to fixing it. You can find an updated and hopefully improved version at User:Jitse Niesen/monobook.js. -- Jitse Niesen 12:51, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"can it be made to save the pages automatically" — my idea was that you want to see it first before you save it. But the customer is king. In the new version at User:Jitse Niesen/monobook.js, there is a variable you can set at the top of the script to make the script save the pages automatically. Use nfd_autosave = true; to save pages automatically (that's how it's set up now), and nfd_autosave = false; if you do not want this.

"does it do the uploader notification?" — the script should work as follows. It opens a new tab with the talk page of the uploader, and places the warning there (depending on your browser, this may also end up at a new window). It opens another new tab with Template:Deletion requests and it adds the image and the reason. Finally, it adds the idw template to the image page. -- Jitse Niesen 12:29, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New Category

[edit]

HiPfctdayelise, You may recall you set up some Categories for me, for which I thank you again. I would now like a Category for myself, but am still not sure whether this is something I can do myself, or does it take an Administrator. Could you please let me know. I know the Licence etc I want to use, it's just the mechanics. Cheers GrahamBould 12:35, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, exact duplicates should be marked {{Duplicate}} (--> speedy delete), whereas {{Redundant}} is now for "obseleted" and similar "redundants". pfctdayelise (translate?) 10:41, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Preferences

[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise, I seem to have screwed up my Commons "skin" preferences - are you able to change it back to the default please? Thanks. Nothing seems to work OK, uploaded file gone - I think something is corrupted... GrahamBould 08:39, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What happened was, I clicked on the Skin called "Chick" in Preferences (I was curious as to whether it should be Chic, as in French, - a mis-spelling). As soon as I did this a lot of things went haywire - most Preferences aren't clickable, including Skins, & the layout is awful. Editing is bad, can't get the cursor to go where want, etc, etc. It points to corruption somewhere... BTW, I am a software tester by profession ;=) Hope you can help. GrahamBould 09:48, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't want the Chick skin improved. I want to get back to the default, Monobook. As I said, in Preferences most options aren't clickable, including Skins. So I can't do it myself. Is there a techo you could refer me to? GrahamBould 10:00, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Afraid not sorry, AFAIR I just copied the information verbatim from en Wiki and pasted in on Commons. Regards, Roo72 05:46, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And again

[edit]

I would like to hear more about your ideas for translation on Commons, automatic or otherwise. I would very much like to see translation of category and other information based on browser and other preferences. Are you familiar with the developments regarding m:Multilingual MediaWiki? +sj +

It is certainly true that right now most wikipedia communities are more interested in Wikipedia than in Commons. But there are also those who care primarily about media, and now that single login is coming it may be easier to get people to participate across projects.
You wrote recently: "It is unrealistic to expect the people who are interested in the Commons to consult over 100 different language groups on ANYTHING let alone EVERYTHING." -- this may be unrealistic now, but should it not be a standing goal? Perhaps beginning with an expectation of consulting on rare occasions with 3 or 5 language groups, and slowly expanding both frequency and # of languages from there. +sj + 16:41, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Adminship

[edit]

Hi - You were kind enough to support my RfA on en:wikipedia. I have put in a request for here too at Commons:Administrators/Requests_and_votes#AYArktos. I want to become an admin particularly to help with Did You Know updates on en:wikipedia; images used need to to be protected while they appear on the main page. Thanks, regards --AYArktos 06:09, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You commented "en.wp has had the habit of uploading main-page images locally (on en.wp) and protecting them there for a day, then deleting them." That is the case but it is very cumbersome and the preferred process is to protect them on commons for the duration. To protect them on en:wikipedia, the updating admin has "download the image manually on to your computer and upload it under the same file name as on commons to the English Wikipedia. Make sure that you also add the author attribution" - the procedure is at w:Wikipedia:Did_you_know/Guide#Pictures. It is such a cumbersome process anyway, that extra fiddling around with images is a discouragement to updating the template. There are of course a heap of other things to do when uploading the template including archiving the previous template and unprotecting images ... the time involved in the update is significant. There are days when it is not updated even though ideally it should be updated at least every 24 hours as "stale items are not fun" and entries cannot relate to articles created more than 120 hours ago. Regards --AYArktos 06:47, 7 May 2006 (UTC).[reply]
  • Thanks for your support and the accompanying qualification about the number of EN admins already. I noted the recent comments about nationality at Template_talk:Administrators/Requests_and_votes and on one of the current candidates. There does however seem a backlog of items at speedy deletion so I am surprised that anyone thinks there are more than enough admins yet. The English and German wikipedias are certainly large projects with many users, I guess I would expect some of that activity to flow through to Commons and thus English and German contributers to be over-represented here and consequently German and English-speaking admins too. Bable templates

[edit]

Hi - I have made a list of babel template usage on user pages - see User:Pfctdayelise/Babel (this list includes templates that are used but do not exist). This type of query would be simpler and more accurate if the babel templates would be categorized according to Commons:Tag categories. They should proabably have their own category... would you like to help with that? -- Duesentrieb(?!) 11:27, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, I think Category:Babel templates or, clearer, Category:User language templates would be good for the language templates, Category:User templates for all "user boxes" (including admin, user from, etc). Following the curren scheme of Commons:Tag categories, language tags shoule be in both categories directly, because searching subcategory structures makes database queries much more complicated and slower.
It would be excellent if you could help with that. Take your time, but keep it in mind. I'm currently in the process of slowly tagging all templates used on image pages. I do batches every few days, i'll be some time until i'm through.
On a slightly related note: I belive "babel boxes" should be used to mark abilities which may be relevant to the project. We should avoid having such boxes for any and all personal preferences (vegetarian, blond, bisexual, ...) - if a user want that info on his page, he can just put the appropriate code there. but that stuff should not clutter the template namespace and tag categories. The header of the tag categories used for such templates should make this clear (well, this should probably also be discussed and documented at Commons:Babel). -- Duesentrieb(?!) 12:14, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, i'm a regular on IRC - mostly #mediawiki and #wikimedia-toolserver, though. I'm usually online later in the day, but i'll join now :) -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:00, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Before you start testing on all self-templates, I feel obliged to tell you that I created template:self-test where you can test all you want... (and , no, I didn't get the automatic signature expansion to work either).

Fred Chess 01:05, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to barge in, but I learned this the hard way with my ventures with {{Langs}} (or {{User:UED77/TestInclude}}):
  • Since ~~~ works like a subst, even if you put in in a template between includeonly tags, it will expand it when saved.
  • If you put it between nowiki tags, it will never expand.
  • If you create two templates that contain, respectively, a nowiki open and a nowiki closed tag, and you try to use that coupled with noinclude to force ~~~ not to expand, your templates will be included correctly, but they won't be parsed as wikitext by the server.
  • If you deliberately try to mismatch noinlcude and nowiki tags, it won't work.
That's all the scenarios I can think of at the moment :D —UED77 01:39, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So you think there is no way to do it? :( pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My past experience has shown that wikitext in templates only gets evaluated if substed — which, of course, we don't want in this case. Therefore, I'm fairly certain that without a software change, there is no way to do it. —UED77 01:47, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Being an admin

[edit]

In Arabic wiki we usually wait a couple of months before someone is even allowed to apply for admin status. Admins should be chosen very carefully in Commons, the deletion process is not reversible for most of the contents. We once had an "Opss, what have we created" case in Arabic wiki. So I recon I will wait for some time before applying, at least, so you guys start to know me better. --Tarawneh 13:57, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Language conventions bird article

[edit]

Another user has been going through and changing the format of the language labels for birds that I have started according to the format you recommended. See, for example, Seiurus motacilla. They are being consistent, it just seems a waste of time for users to be using different standards and altering each other's work. (Time might be better spent making new articles.) I left a message on the talk page: User_talk:Factumquintus#Limnothlypis_swainsonii, but have gotten no response. Any ideas? I'd be happy to use another format, I just feel we should all be using more or less the same one. Any ideas? --Cotinis 01:13, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene,

I know you have left a few message on this user's talk page in the past, I was wondering if you could talk to them again. The number of image deletion warnings they have is really ridiculous. I think this user should be blocked because they never seem to do anything about it. But I will leave it to your judgement. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:48, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what to do in this case. He seems to stop activities (last edit was at April 9), but I'll left "last" warning on his talk page.
At first I don't understand reason to mass bot uploads of images collected from different wiki (who know where admins care about copyrights?). He didn't care too much at beginning about proper catgorisation, looking for already moved images. I think it's his responsibility to look critically to images for detecting possible copyvios/complete source/author information before uploading images here.

Overwriting images?

[edit]

Hi, I promise never to thank you again for voting for me :-) In the mean time I have a question. With my new found powers I thought I would tackle CAT:CSD. I am a little confused as to how to do one part of the process outlined in the Deletion guidelines, namely:

When speedy-deleting files, it is suggested but not required to run CheckUsage in order to fix uses on Wikimedia projects. Alternatively you can overwrite the image with Image:Cross.png or Image:Cross.jpg, and provide a note on the image description page about the deletion and delete the crossed page after a while. However due to the nature of speedy delete you can skip that but please be aware that the probability that this file will be reuploaded again by someone is higher if doing so and be also aware that this will cause bad "image holes" in articles that might can cause not so nice rants from suprised people that were not aware of the blatant problem with that file.

The item I picked was indeed used across other projects (at least 8). So I would like to replace the image with a cross and a note but not sure how to do that. I feel really stupid for asking what is perhaps obvious, ie I just re-upload with the revised image to the same file name, but I would like to get it right. Thanks for your help.--AYArktos 11:06, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons and nl: again

[edit]

Hiya, sorry to trouble you with this, I've been an admin now for just about a month and a bit now on nl.wikipedia, but I still see a lot of what I think is commons-related activity done by anonymous users, who don't respond to messages on their talk pages and in general don't even try to make an effort to use your translations or something like that. I'm all for Commons, because figuring out copyright status on a local project is hard enough and I think that Commons should be at least a little bit more qualified than us locals ;-), but what's so hard about at least making an account with at least a redirect or other direct link to Commons on other projects? It takes 1 minute of work for each account, but at least makes it easy for people in a local project to identify with the user. I personally use a Firefox toolbar, which makes it even easier, but with cookies enabled, if you have an account on a project, it's just 2 seconds of work (provided that it's wikipedia, not lohipedia :-)). Just my two cents on this issue. NielsF 03:43, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to keep you busy ;-) but I've replied to your comment on my talkpage and added another question there. To keep the discussion in one place could you answer there? NielsF 22:26, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pfctdayelise,
Thanks for linking the above in Flamarande's rant; I was wondering if it had been proposed before, but a preliminary search yielded nothing (or, more likely, I missed it while scanning). For what it's worth, I've added my vote to the eight that were already there...
Best wishes, David Kernow 11:23, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I hate to break it to you, but [Bugzilla voting is] probably worth nothing. The only consistent way I have seen bugs solved is by also posting a patch/solution...

From seeing a couple of ideas I had re Wikipedia already well-buried there (e.g. Bugzilla:167) I reckoned this was the case, but have some sympathy as it's all voluntary... Still, implementing just a select few suggested enhancements would, I think, make such a difference...
Thanks for your message, David Kernow 00:41, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your support. I have added babel boxes to my page as you suggested, unfortunately it looks as if I won't get enough support as the seven days voting period is nearly finished. Regards Arniep 22:58, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I got another vote so maybe I'll get in. I realise I haven't been involved in the discussion pages very much so far, something I'll have to make more effort with! Cheers Arniep 23:14, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In re your suggestion, I went looking for an admin when I saw what that user was doing on Recent Changes, but couldn't find one. They may not understand Commons rules or Talk pages, and a short block to interrupt them might have been useful to get their attention. Jkelly 15:40, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category watching

[edit]

Hi again Pfctdayelise,
I'm probably missing something obvious, so apologies in advance if this is a "no-brainer": How do you set your watchlist to indicate new additions to categories?  For instance, I'm interested in maps (in case you hadn't noticed!) and contributors sometimes dump... <cough> place them in Category:Maps rather than an appropriate subcategory... Thanks, David Kernow 01:50, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi David, unfortunately there is no way to do what you describe...

Thanks, though, for Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Maps; it will be better than nothing!  Best wishes, David 11:14, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

...I would rather have someone dump an image in a generic category (like Category:Maps) than nowhere at all...

Agreed; I have no idea how many map images are lost in the Commons' ocean (and currently I prefer this state of ignorant bliss lack-of-despair) but at least those somewhere within Category:Maps should someday find an appropriate subcategory.

rely on the wiki-way to eventually produce someone who is galled enough by the disorganisation to bother cleaning it up. ;) cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:25, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

{{Badname}} and other Speedy deletion woes

[edit]

Hey UED77, I didn't realise until just now that you intended to do away with a option to write in a reason for speedy deletion alltogether. (Was that your intention? CAT:CSD seems to be up to date but Template:Speedydelete does not mention the new templates badname, etc.) Anyway I just wanted to say please leave an option for people to write in a reason, otherwise we will just get more deletion requests clogging up COM:VP, COM:DEL and any other place they can think of. :) (Some people just want to write a reason even if there's a template applicable to them.) It's hard to keep it simple...! pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:28, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Elise,
My intention when I created the Category:Incorrectly named, Category:Against policy, and Category:Duplicate was to separate three types of speedy deletions. Allow me to explain.
  • Category:Against policy (invoked by {{Copyvio}} or {{Fair use}} was meant for those files that could be deleted on sight, after warning the uploader. It was meant to encourage lazy people like me to frequent CAT:SD by providing a "choose a random picture and delete" sort of environment. Of course, I am aware that this is a bit of an exaggeration, as the uploader should nevertheless be notified and the validity of the copyvio-claim should be checked, but if that is performed, IMHO, the admins' responsibility ends. Honestly, I doubt any admin — except for maybe Fred — is eager to replace usages of a copyvio and notify other projects that use that file, so CAT:SD-AP is meant to be ultra-convenient for Commons admins, plus, it's beneficial to the project itself as the most urgent deletions are separated from less crucial, but nonetheless still speedy deletions.
  • Category:Duplicate (invoked by {{Duplicate}} was meant to replace one specific use of the dozen uses of Category:Redundant/{{Redundant}}. Specifically, it's meant for images that are exactly the same, so one of them should be deleted. Looking back, I'm certain I made this a speedy because redundant was also a speedy, but now I'm thinking more and more about changing it to a mere marker tag.
  • Category:Incorrectly named (invoked by {{Badname}} was honestly intended to be a simple tag, but it has generated quite some confusion. I've read your comments on its talk page, and I understand your confusion. {{Badname}} was meant specifically for the oft-occuring situation where a user uploads a file, but realizes soon after that the name contained a typo, misspelling, etc., and proceeds to upload the same image with (hopefully) the same description under the right name. In this case, the uploader would tag the wrong one with {{Badname}}, providing admins with, if that's even possible, a deletion category even easier than CAT:SD-AP, as hopefully these incorrectly named images would not yet be used anywhere. Unfortunately, I haven't explained the specific use of this template in sufficient detail, so that needs to be corrected on {{Redundant}}. If the file in question is already widely used, despite of technically possessing a "bad name", {{Duplicate}} is more appropriate. I do need to find a way to make this very clear.
I have not yet changed {{Speedy}} yet, which is somewhat of a mistake, as I was doing these changes at around 03:00 in my time zone, and I was tired and wanted to get speedy deletion categories and templates rearranged in the least amount of time possible, in order to not disturb the ever-active Commons too much. After that, I typed up a longish post in VP and crashed, and I never got around to changing {{Speedy}}. Just three days ago, I created a user copy of speedy to experiment with a few changes, but I forgot to mention the new templates... again. I when I'll apply some aesthetic changes to Speedy in the coming days, I'll mention the new, more specific templates.
As for trying to eliminate a reason for speedy deletion altogther, I have thought about it, but my current stance (as seen on my user copy of speedy) is to make it optional. However, my intention was to replace a generic {{Speedy}} with a set of more specific tags that would supply a reason to a pseudo-meta template speedy. I'm mainly aiming to make the jobs of admins easier, as well as to standardize the set of reasons, in a way, for an optional eventual attempt by the likes of Teofilo to translate the reasons, if they feel that is necessary. Sure, I agree the option to give an override reason should be given, but otherwise, I feel that copyvio, uploader mistake (badname) and duplicate are, however strange that might be, a quite comprehensive set of reasons for speedy deletions, and will remain so even if duplicate is made a marker tag. —UED77 15:06, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
ROFLMAO @ WarX's message below. I guess it's not only me and Fred that remove the copyvios from use...
Back to the issue at hand, sorry if I've been overly critical! I am just concerned that changing the deletion process too much confuses users and results in more misapplied deletion requests (I especially want to lessen the number of wrong requests at COM:DEL, ie. requests that can be handled as speedy cases). Having it simple for admins is good, but having it simple for users is more necessary since they're the ones that implement the whole thing. So one thing that is very confusing is having different references say different things (one thing says "db", one says "speedydelete", one says "badname"... they give up and list on COM:DEL).
Also I very much think duplicate should remain a deletion tag. Since it is quite likely to be used instead of badname, at least for a few more months. pfctdayelise (translate?) 23:35, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, yes, apparently I'm great at upsetting people :P
No, you weren't overly critical at all. I understand your concerns; the deletion process needs to be explained on one page in multiple languages in detail, as well as briefly in every cat / template, to benefit the users who are — understandably — confused about the different types of deletions.
All right, duplicate will be kept as a speedy tag for now; in the meantime, I'll work on a way to concisely explain the specific niche {{Badname}} is used for. And I'll modify the {{Speedy}} template soon as well :) —UED77 23:51, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and also, regarding {{Badname}} and its likes putting images in both a specific speedy-cat and CAT:SD, it doesn't increase the size of CAT:SD, at least to my understanding. Once the image is deleted, regardless of which category it was found in, it disappears from the other, no? :) —UED77 00:00, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But if images like {{Badname}} only go into one category, we'll be able to weed out all the old non-specific speedy requests. CAT:CSD can be kept for the generic write-in-a-reason speedy requests that will require more attention than just deleting a duplicate. Having CAT:CSD with literally hundreds of members makes it quite useless as a category. I just don't see the value in double listing an image in a more specific cat and a generic one, when the specific cat is a subcat of the generic one. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:03, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay. That makes sense, and now I'm somewhat surprised why that didn't occur to me. I'll change the templates in question before the cats are hopelessly flooded :D —UED77 01:08, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All right. Please check out the new {{Redundant}}, {{Copyvio}}, {{Fair use}}, {{Duplicate}}, {{Badname}}, and {{Speedy}}, and tell me what you think. —UED77 02:23, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks better, but don't forget COM:DG should be the primary reference - so it needs to be updated too. (It still mentions redundant.)
I think we should make a big flowchart, COM:DG is too dense. Hm I will think about it... pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:40, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ack! That page scares me. Well, some tasks must be left for tomorrow, and this seems like a perfect one to do that to! :) I'll condense and refactor it later in the day (by UTC), hopefully. —UED77 02:57, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Imagine how it looks to noobs who just want their image deleted! I started a flowchart at User:Pfctdayelise/test#.5B.5BCOM:DG.5D.5D_flowchart (incomplete, yeah I should work now...). If you can think of ANY conceivable reason for requesting deletion that I didn't mention, you're welcome to add to it. I would like to make something really pretty like Commons:Multimediahilfe. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:10, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ouch. That page scares me even more :) Although pretty-printing and the strategic use of headings will help a lot. With my presently tired brain, I was satisfied with the choices, but I'll be sure to add more if they come to my mind. —UED77 03:41, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for you efforts and also for the explination as to how to labe a photo in a message such as this. I shall endeavour to learn faster than I have. I am connecting photos from w-media to articles in W-pedia. I will also try and find appropriate links here. I find that many uploaders dont do that and missing photos in wikipedia are actually over here in wikimedia. In particular my interest in botony and plant classification. Yhanks again. Discussion Page

[edit]

Hi elise, I'm sorry that you were complaining about my discussion page; I also don't like personal page threathed as blog, but I simply tought ok, I don't like it, but I'm not oblied to see it. So is there an official policy for personal pages? Because I like to have in line only the last discussions only the time it's needed. And there is always the history. So if there aren't problems, I would prefer to continue that way. Ciao,--mac 07:21, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't think I haven't take in account this opportunty, but for me it's just a matter of wasting time. Tanks for your patience, --mac 07:29, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pfctdayelise,
Hope you approve of my recent tweak to your redirection of the above; creating Maps of Frankfurt's history is on my to-create list. "Frankfurt's history" prompted me to think that Category:Maps of ''X'''s history (where X is a country) may be preferable to the Category:Maps of ''X''ian history format Flamarande and I are currently using... Any thoughts?

Also, in case you aren't already too busy (!), what do you make of this...?

Best wishes, David Kernow 16:14, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure what you are doing in your cleanup, but some of it quite confuses me. Like I hope you are not manually cut&paste moving pages. Use the 'move' tab (for one thing, it preserves history).

Worry not; I'm aware cut&pasting is a no-no. Thus far I have looked at less than a handful of article pages (one being including Historical maps of Frankfurt).

And don't be afraid of a few RDRs. For articles they work perfectly. It doesn't matter if the name doesn't represent exactly the same thing (eg old/historical). For categories you can use {{Category redirect}} or indeed request deletion ... I don't see what was wrong with 'Historical maps of X'.

For map categories, there are plenty of images (and a couple of talk-page comments) indicating that "historical" is an ambiguous description; is the map "historical" (i.e. old), the period "historical", or both?  Using "Maps of X", "Old maps of X" and "Maps of the history of X" (see below) seems much clearer. Hence my preference for deletion rather than retaining names using "historical" by keeping them as redirects.

Category:Maps of X's history - or Maps of the history of X - is indeed preferable to Maps of Xian history, simply because a good many countries have awkward or non existent adjectival forms.

I agree; and for that reason, I think Flamarande and I will settle on "Maps of the history of X".

But anyway, I'm not one for re-inventing the wheel; I suggest you dig into Wikipedia's Manual of style and investigate their reasons for choosing certain naming conventions. Have you made a category scheme? Pick one standard that will scale OK and stick with it.

Well, MoS notwithstanding, all is not straightforward at (the English) Wikipedia re category names involving countries and the like...

And don't RDR to non-existent pages.. >:|

Okay – thanks for letting me know!

I think it is fine if you are whitelisted for Orgullobot...

Since I left my previous message, Orgullomore may have contrived a solution; see User talk:David Kernow#Using Orgullobot.

I don't know why you don't consider becoming an admin, though. :)

Primarily because I'd say my involvement has been overly specific/one-dimensional – mostly maps!

Thanks for your thoughts, David 23:39, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship

[edit]

Regarding your last comment on my talkpage, sparked by another Commons-related debate (Commons:Village_pump#Random_image_deletion: If you would nominate me for adminship I wouldn't decline, because of my few edits on Commons (I've hardly past the 100-limit) I wouldn't selfnominate though. I'haven't that much experience with adminship on my local wiki, nl.wikipedia, but I think that since I'm quite active in nl.wikipedia and speak (and/or understand) multiple languages I could help Commons a bit (for example in the Mac vs RedDevil666 debate I could've cleared things up a little). I don't want to be an admin per sé, but I would accept my responsibility as one by for example helping to clear up backlogs. I would also like to change some Dutch translations of MediaWiki messages, as I indicated to Duesentrieb on my own talkpage.

Although he's not been very active here, another nl.wikipedia recent admin, User:Siebrand has been very active in cleaning up Commons-duplicates from NL, maybe you could convince him too? Cheers from the other end of the world. NielsF 01:30, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Canada map

[edit]

Actually.. they are already up in individual maps. :) Check Category:Maps of Canada for some and Category:Historical maps of Canada for others (someone moved some; I haven't been bothered to move them back, or move all of them). I still think we need the dates, so it doesn't become too abstract, but maybe that AND a timeline would be useful.

I could also slow down the animation, to give people more time to take it all in; maybe I should also have a short description of what changed in that timeframe, so they have some context for the change in the map? Of course, this is all adding stuff to the map, when you wanted it trimmed down a bit :) As for moving it to the upper left, yeah, it's kind of barren up there, but I also wouldn't want the reader to constantly have to shoot his eyes to an empty part of the map every fame. At least this way, it's kind of concentrated. But I could be wrong.

At least this one only has 16 frames, and Australia when I make it will have only four. My USA map so far has *72*, thankfully I'm almost done, but still. --Golbez 14:20, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a use to uploading them all in one filename, it should be easy for people to find the individual ones rather than having to know it's hidden under the main one. As for smaller, it's possible, but it would make the fonts very small... at some point, for example, you lose the ability to differentiate the Maritime Provinces altogether. --Golbez 16:50, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Behaviour: warning

[edit]

I'm not the one removing the tags. Now can you get the delete tags restored, since the images are listed for deletion and it would benefit the community to have them tagged as such? --Jiang 01:10, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When you say, "We at the Commons are NOT interested in having a giant war about any images," who are you speaking for? I have been posting to the comments for a while now. I am not the one who brought the dispute from english wikipedia to the commons.

I am more than happy to be civil. At this point, Jiang keeps ratcheting up the debate, and this has been going on for a while now. I say leave the images tagged as they are right now. They wouldn't have been listed here in the commons if Jiang hadn't try to shortcut a debate he was loosing on the english wikipedia. --Evrik 01:32, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • OK, I am not interested in having a giant war about any images. If you can find an admin here who is, then good luck to you. The dispute should have been here in the first place, since this is where the images are. You can't "lose" a debate about copyright. You either have demonstratable evidence to support your stance or you don't. Please stop making any comment whatsoever about Jiang. Focus your comments on the images. Regards, pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:35, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • In my attempt to research this, each time I have posted new evidence, I keep getting shouted down, and then the argument gets expanded. The only reason I have commented on Jiang is that if you look at the course of the debate, this hasn't been about the truth, this has been about winning. As I have said elsewhere, next week, I am contacting the Library of Congress to see if i can't get a written response about the status of PD and the copyright. --Evrik 01:42, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • It's not about winning! It's about maintaining the integrity of the Commons and the Wikipedia as harbours of truly free content. As I said, please just avoid mentioning Jiang, let's focus on the copyright issues. It's good that you are contacting the Library of Congress. The images are not going to be deleted tomorrow, don't worry. Please report back what they say or offer in writing. I trust you are big enough to report back even if they end up saying they're not public domain. Regards, pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:46, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • I realize it's not about winning, I was describing the actions of the other user (who will remain nameless). I also realize that the deletion won't be immediate, but by tagging the images it forces a false deadline. This has been frustrating because of the way the debate has progressed. I will report back when I get an answer. --Evrik 01:50, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • I totally agree with Evrik about the false deadline. Because of this, I think you will apreciate the template I created as a remedy: {{Disputed}} . It's quite new and not an official template, but maybe it would be useful for You. / Fred Chess 22:21, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PAGENAMEE was used in Hello, {{PAGENAME}}, and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. and [http://tools.wikimedia.de/~daniel/WikiSense/Gallery.php?&wikifam=commons.wikimedia.org&img_user_text={{PAGENAMEE}} Gallery]. On the second one the space breaks the url and PAGENAMEE should be used.

What i changed was the Hello PAGENAMEE, as you don't want to be called Miguel_herrera_ya%C3%B1ez as it showed on User talk:Miguel herrera yañez. The _ is not clean, but having the % escaping is completely inacceptable.

I don't think it cuts off anything after the first space, as it is simply included, without tags around.

Redirecting categories

[edit]

Hi again Pfctdayelise,
Hope all well. I guess the answer to the following is straightfoward, but I've either forgotten it or am missing something: Why use {{Categoryredirect}} rather than #redirect [[:Category:...]] to redirect categories?  Is it only to have redirects listed at Category:Category redirects or is there something else?
Thanks, David Kernow 22:56, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. Re using {{Categoryredirect}} rather than #redirect [[:Category:...]], I realise I'd forgotten to imagine I was contributing to as well as browsing categories. Re User:Orgullobot/whitelist, yes, Orgullomoore has enabled Orgullobot for me, so I guess my name needs to be added. I'll ask him to do so. Best wishes, David 00:15, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pfctdayelise, thanks for deleting two of the four offending pictures. As for the two ones left, what would be the correct procedure? Remove the images from the sister projects with an explanatory note? The 2 style were made by user:M4RC0, first Kanji Stroke Order, and then Category:Chinese stroke order in BW pictures. Kanji Stroke Order is now a bad quality duplicata, and M4RC0 agree the deletion ("no problem, have fun with the 200 file to delete :] M4RC0" )
I think some files should be use in wikimedia project, but that should be about 10 files, and they are the old style.
If you can delete them, and add the comment : Delete because of duplicata, see [[user:Yug]], [[user:M4RC0]], and [[:Category:Chinese stroke order in BW pictures]]. - that should be ok.

Xinjiang

[edit]

Hi. I did not learn but a few words in Uyghur. I've been studing chinese daily for two months before go and I use this to (try) to communicate. I used mostly single words such as "thanks, hello, beer, expensive...". Just notice similarities with Turkish itself (I was in Turkey in 1992) and of course with Arabian. There is a lot of arabian words in Spanish and for example "musica" (music) is the same pronounciation for both. But nothing about read nor writting. Regards, --Colegota 09:35, 29 May 2006 (UTC) PD Of course you know you are free to crop my images like in User:Pfctdayelise/Xinjiang and create new versions. Hi again. This is the tomb of some king of Yarkand. But I don't know who. As this signs said it could be anyone of mentioned. Maybe the founder, because the shoot shows the interior of the wooden house you can see here and it looks as the more important. The blurred part is the wood grid you can also see at the end of the photo (It was the bigger hole I've found to shoot inside). And this is the rear of the "hut/tomb" with also the tombs of a wife and a child.
I saw the nice photos of your friend. In this (second) travel to China I did a Sichuan - Gansu - Xinjiang itinerary. I did post-procesed most of Sichuan and Xinjiang, but not still Gansu. Looking for an admin

[edit]

Hi again. Some days ago I noticed that User:YolanC was removing description text for galleries and giving unfriendly messages to authors. I leave a friendly note on his user talk page and try to explain why not destroying information. Later another admin has been reverted his changes and explained to the user. But then she/he makes a boycott to Peru page by putting description text on every language she/he found. That was again reverted by the admin but she/he continues vandalizating the page every time she/he connects. User is not ready to talk about but that you can see in his talk page. Could you take a look, please? I don't like to follow an edit war. Thanks, --Colegota 14:04, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I know about monobook hacks for languages, but it's not a problem about me. I prefer to see as many languages as possible for editing an search purposes. There is a problem with user attitude. Some days ago she's removing multilingual text (and all the text in some cases (Bremerhaven, Post box, Amsterdam, Pear, Feather, Igloo, Cetorhinus_maximus...) Then we ask for stop but she disagree and whe she gets without arguments he start doing all the opposite. fill the article of Peru with all the text she found to show how bad is to put text in pages. This was reverted for the other admin but she does't talk about it and just revert the reversions once again. Even now she's putting the text at bottom of page instead at top.
Well this is not an edit war to show what every user thinks is better. I showed her a bunch of well known pages looking this way ( London, United Kingdom, 上海, China, 北京, etc.) but this user has an attitude problem as you can see in talks with other users.
BTW we must also think that Commonist can use monobook language hacks (in a future, it's not extended by now) but outside visitors do not. So maybe it's not a good idea to put all more than 200 languages in a gallery. For search and first look purposes it can be enought with most common used languages (both as first and second language), local language (when applicable) and related languages. But local and related are often filled by specialized people so there is no need to worry about... but if we previously have filled page with all languages in the World. Remenber that we also have interwikis, so most people can reach the name of the gallery in a common language and then jump to the specific wiki.
Thanks, --Colegota 15:39, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Xinjiang nationalities

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your comments and compliments! As for sources, well, I had to scurry around a number of pages (mostly on de, some on en) to find the information for each prefecture. But it looks like en:Xinjiang#Demographics has a table now with pretty complete census data. As you can see from that table, most of the Kazak Autonomous Prefecture has very large Han pluralities or majorities; only Altai Prefecture is mostly Kazak (in the region of 50%). Because Xinjiang is ethnically mixed, with especially large numbers of Uyghurs, Kazaks, Han, Hui, and others, a number of prefecture-level units have no overall ethnic majority. I coloured them according to whichever nationality had a plurality or relative majority.

It took me a while to wrap my mind around the idea of a smooth gradient scale myself, and I can appreciate it's not likely to be to everybody's liking! So feel free to make your own version with cleaner divisions; or alternatively, to check my work against the census table. And thanks, QuartierLatin1968 18:30, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic

[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise, I am really sorry, but I have no idea how to help you on this. The only thing I can think of, is to send you different word examples with each letter in a different color, this might help you to get to know the letters. I will try to get examples covering most of the possible Arabic letter combination. But that will have to wait tell the weekend. --Tarawneh 05:13, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

don't subst deletion tags

[edit]

I was amazed about which tags i were substituting. I guess you mean [1] of {{Idw}}. I didn't placed it by hand. It was placed by the automatic for deletion script. Which -ironically- points to your own monobook! (i was also surprised when i checked the script source). So "var txt = '{{subst:' + nfd_idwTemplate" may need to change to "var txt = '{{' + nfd_idwTemplate"

Sorry to barge in, but thanks, Elise, for fixing mine as well :) —UED77 21:51, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

en:User:Maddyfan claims that the above (originally uploaded as en:Image:Forbiddenlovecropped.jpg) is a photo taken by a friend of theirs (and provides their email address for verification at en:). I don't have any real reason to doubt their claim, but no real reason to believe it either. I figured, however, if we were going to be hosting this image here, we may as well have the full actual photograph, not just the crop that wound up getting uploaded. No val la pena contestar-te, però he decidit de fer-ho.

[edit]

Et deus sentir molt important bloquejant-me.

Ja us ho fareu.

Rough translation to en: It isn't worth to answer you, but I've decided to do

[edit]

If you want to know the personality of someone, give him power.

Those users who have not the same experience you have, should be helped instead of laughing on ours. Because the experience you achieved, you should have been read already http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_do_not_bite_the_newcomers .

I know. It's more difficult helping than reprimanding. It's more difficult to work in team than aplying the power you have as you're a sysop. You may feel a very important user because you can block me. It's too shame checking out that I've been already adviced and so I've not been violated any license rules, but in spite of it you've blocked me.

It's pity that persons as you force people to leave this project, people that contributes here with no personal benefits.

But I like as too much this project as I'll continue here, tough here are persons as you.

If you unblock me, obviously!

If you want, answer me in English, I've made efforts to learn several languages, but allow me to do it in Catalan in order to express all raged feelings that I've inside me.

Don't worry, I won't give you more work, I will take a lot of time before adding photos of mine again.

Find out your way.

Here you have a rougly translation. If you want that I contact and help this user, ask me for it. Cheers. --Joanot Martorell 08:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it looks better, although I need to do something about those redlinks! The Commons is going to give me lots to do this summer. :^) For the licensing menu, I translated vi:MediaWiki:Licenses based on the English Wikipedia version a few months ago, so most of the menu items correlate. For the sitewide menu in MediaWiki:Sidebar, I can translate them for you right now; we can work on less prominent messages later (messages in this list that are already translated are given in italics):

  • Dẫn lái – This is what we use at the Vietnamese Wikipedia too, but it doesn't sound right. I'll have to ask about this one.
    • mainpage|Trang Chính
    • welcome-url|Hoan nghênh – I think maybe Giới thiệu ("Introduction" or "About us") works better here.
    • portal-url|Cộng đồng
    • village pump-url|Thảo luận – This just means "Discussion"; the Vietnamese Wikipedia never came up with a creative name for their source of water. :^)
  • Tham gia
    • Upload-url|Truyền lên tập tin
    • recentchanges-url|Thay đổi gần đây
    • latestfiles-url|Tập tin mới
    • randomimage-url|Tập tin ngẫu nhiên
    • helppage|Trợ giúp
    • contact-url|Liên lạc
    • sitesupport-url|Quyên góp

Also, "Privacy policy" is Chính sách về sự riêng tư; "Text is available under GNU Free Documentation License." is Văn bản được phép sử dụng theo Giấy phép Tài liệu Tự do GNU.; and "Disclaimers" is Lời phủ nhận.

I'm going to talk to the Vietnamese Wikipedia community about getting the LanguageVi.php file updated again. There were many mistakes and omissions in it, and we've also made the MediaWiki: namespace a lot more consistent at vi:.

Oh, almost forgot: we decided to change our translation of "GFDL" from Giấy phép Văn bản Tự do GNU to Giấy phép Tài liệu Tự do GNU just today. Thanks for your help. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 00:01, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User done and...

[edit]

thanks for the clavel, I love them, very kind of you :) Anna 23:06, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand everything, it's catalonian language, but in a nutshell he's complaining about your preponent attitude of blockage instead of help. He says he had been warned and since then, he hadn't broken any other rules. The message isn't very polite.
I'm checking his contributions now, there are some images brought from the french wikipedia with wrong licenses, some others without license in the origin and even one fair use Image:180px-Likud Logo.png. There's a bit of a mess in there. Anna 00:24, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I just finished checking his contributions and marking and correcting them. I also dropped a warning on his talk page. Anna 02:44, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pfctdayelise, I read your message about {{PD-Iran}} but I can't add it to the Copyright tags page because it's protected, I've seen you were and admin, so you should be able to do that for me...Thanks a lot! Fabienkhan 13:15, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

it doesn't matter, I didn't became angry for that ;-) thanks for the integration to the page ! Fabienkhan 15:59, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Automation of no source/unknown tagging/notification

[edit]
Thank you!

Could please try to implement no source/unknown tagging/notification in way similar to nominating for deletion? Sorry, I'm not good specialist in JavaScript, so I can't do this myself :-( --EugeneZelenko 14:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! --EugeneZelenko 13:18, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And I forgot yesterday about {{Own work}} marking/notification. Sorry for that. --EugeneZelenko 14:20, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake

[edit]

While I was testing your new monobook.js, I did not know it runs automatically. I am sorry, because I make a mistake in the picture of the day. Greetings. --Prevert(talk) 17:17, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are right. At that moment I was making other changes and I tested it. Sorry. --Prevert(talk) 17:40, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About translating and stuff

[edit]

Salut.. As the translation coordination page offers very little in the way of useful advice (in this matter), I turn to you. I just did a translation of the welcome page to Finnish and I was left wondering, how can you modify the panel on the left? Strangely, some of the links are in English, some in Finnish. And please answer here, I can't stand people throwing replies all over the talk page universe :)... --Lumijaguaari (моє обговорення) 02:44, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grooh, I hate replying on my own page.. >:| I'm only doing it for you! :)
I think the Commons page is not very clear because the process is quite complex. If you give me translations for the English strings I will try to implement them. Wait... you're an admin, right? There is some useful info on MediaWiki talk:Sidebar, also m:Help:Navigation bar. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:48, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks. I'll have a look on those pages. And I still don't get why people want their replies away from the questions so that it's impossible with people with similar questions to follow the conversation... --Lumijaguaari (моє обговорення) 10:44, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yepp, found what I'm looking for! Kiitos. --Lumijaguaari (моє обговорення) 10:58, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I admit the wiki reply system took me a while to get used to, but now I like it because if people reply on my talk page, I get "new messages" notifications and I don't have to put 600 talk pages on my watchlist. Either way is not really perfect though. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:51, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

disputed template again

[edit]

i'm not sure what to do with Template:Disputed. At first I created it because people often upload images that I was being sceptical about, or where the license status on English Wikipedia is still pending. Thus I needed a quarantine zone, or something like that. I still don't know how to get the nominate-for-deletion-nominate-uploader-add-ifd-tag-with-one-click to work so it takes a lot of time to do this template. I don't like that just missing information makes images eligible for deletion after 7 days. Nobody would delete a whole article because it isn't sourced, so I don't see why images should face that fate if they can be assumed to be public domain but are lacking a source. Maybe you can make something out of it.

Maybe I could move the template to "further information requested" or so... / Fred Chess 08:10, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pfctdayelise. Thanks for your comment and help. I implemented them in my copyright template. Unfortunately, I am currently very busy in my real world, and cannot contribute to your license project as i would have liked to. Very sorry and many thanks -- Chris 73 10:38, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya, maybe a stupid question but what would you do with these images? I've tagged the former with {{Superseded}} because the latter seems to have more life-like colours. I haven't seen the painting itself however... Thanks in advance for your opinion! NielsF 16:31, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Let people decide for themselves, good reasoning that. I've removed the template because I already was in doubt whether or not to use it, hence my question here. Thanks for the help. NielsF 16:45, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
