Retagging to PD-Hubble
[edit]Hello, there has been some debate over there about the retagging of images: Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Attention#Lots_of_ESA_images. Can you please comment on that page? -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:58, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
Pay attention to copyright | Image:AB7 Excitation Nebula.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content, that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. For images, you may find Commons:Image casebook useful. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added will soon be deleted. If you believe this image is not a copyright violation, please explain why on the image description page.

- Hi! It's great that ESO is about to change their copyright statement and release their images under a free licence. Until the copyright page is updated, however, there is a chance that some of the images that you uploaded will be deleted - there's no way for Commons users of guessing that the copyright notice will change! That could be very annoying for you, since it would basically mean that you would have to re-do a number of uploads. If I were you, I would either wait until the copyright notice has changed before doing anymore uploads, or add an explanation (as you did on Image talk:AB7 Excitation Nebula.jpg) on the talk pages.
- Also, once the copyright page has changed, you might want to post a message on Commons:Village Pump: I'm sure many people will be glad to hear the news and will be happy to help upload ESO images on Commons. Cheers, Pruneautalk 15:38, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

We are in the process of adding a new copyright notice that conforms with the proposed creative commons licence. Hopefully this will be online very shortly.
AS of now I have stoped uploading images. The category page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:European_Southern_Observatory_Images
contains all the images that have been uploaded and will be subject to the new copyright terms
Image Tagging Image:NGC 1850.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:NGC 1850.jpg. This image is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org).
Unless the permission information is given, the image may be speedy deleted after seven days. Thank you. Sdrtirs (talk) 17:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Sign your posts
[edit]As a courtesy to other editors, it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on talk pages, user talk pages, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and the date will be then be automatically added along with a timestamp when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). For further info, read Commons:Talk page guidelines. Thank you. Sdrtirs (talk) 18:38, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Change in ESO copyright

Adding permission link to images
[edit]Hello! I'm glad that copyright is clear now. Now, to prevent images to be nominated for deletion, please add the permission link to image description, like I did in Image:NGC 1850.jpg. Have good edits! Regards, Sdrtirs (talk) 18:56, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Wikimedia Commons has a specific scope
[edit]
Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote.
If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding. Kanonkas(talk) 14:43, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Hubble Images
[edit]Hello Lars, maybe you want to comment on this. Thanks a lot! --Vesta (talk) 14:33, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
File:Andromeda_Chart_IAU.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:11, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

File:Esocast standard.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Copyright status: File:Europe stars ch1.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Europe stars ch1.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Hi JuTa!
These files were designed and produced by us here at ESO. We will look into assigning them the right license to reflect that. Thanks!

Image copyright status
[edit]The image at File:Treasures3.jpg was uploaded by you many years ago. It is tagged as being under an ESO license. However it appears actually to be copyright Robert Gendler (see [1])? The source URL at File:Treasures3.jpg does show that the image appears in the book but does not show that the copyright is held by the ESO. Can you clarify, please? Copyright images are not generally acceptable on Wikimedia Commons, only those with free licenses. Lithopsian (talk) 18:49, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
