Hi, I'm Katy Blackwood. I'm a photographer and journalist living in Sheffield, United Kingdom. Follow me on Twitter and Instagram if you'd like to keep tabs on my work, and do say hello!

My contributions

[edit]

I occasional work with Wikimedia UK to produce high-quality photography for inclusion on the Commons under an open license, and to improve the quality of photographs used on Wikipedia. While my background is in music, I focus on other entertainment and significant events here. Wikimedia UK published a blog that I wrote on the subject here.

Using my Commons uploads

[edit]

All of my contributions to the Commons are released under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International unless otherwise stated. Under these terms, you may use the specific photograph freely for any purpose, but in doing so you must:

  • Attribute (credit) the work to Katy Blackwood wherever used;
  • Indicate if any changes, such as additional processing, were made;
  • Release any modified version under the same license.

For super-duper brownie points, please consider also linking to my website, my Twitter or my Instagram. Thanks! <3

Important note

[edit]

Although my photography on the Commons is available for use under CC BY-SA 4.0, the vast majority of my work online is under full copyright. If you have seen one of my photos elsewhere and wish to use it, or are unsure of the licensing status of any of my work, please contact me to discuss.

Other notes

Upload formats

[edit]

My uploads are currently presented in the PNG format due to a known issue on the Commons involving the over-sharpening of JPEG images created from high-resolution professional photographs. I am politely requesting that my images are not uploaded here as JPEG.

Providing my images as PNG also allows users to, within the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, adapt them from a lossless format into JPEG for use elsewhere. Also, the Commons guidance on formats explicitly stipulates that "print quality photographs" are ideal for PNG upload.

If you object, please contact richard.symonds@wikimedia.org.uk to discuss this before taking any action. Wikimedia UK are supporting my photography here and are keen for my wishes to be respected.

I advocate a 'no-sharpen' option for advanced users to solve this issue. This would upload the JPEG images without sharpening when the user knows the end result will be more favourable without the default ImageMagick processing.
