Summary[edit]

Description
English: An Extra Credit Project for my Physics class. This short video explains what makes a material magnetic at the atomic level. CG and Editing done in Blender. www.blender.org

Further Information: It is actually not the orbiting of the electrons around the nuclei of the atoms that causes the magnetic field. Although the electron's orbital motion (if what electrons do can be called "orbital" anymore) does create a magnetic field, the orientation of their orbits is not shared via quantum mechanics, and all the different orbital fields cancel out no matter what material the atom is part of. What IS shared by the quantum effects mentioned in the video is the electron "spin". This property, though not entirely analogous to physical rotation about an axis, is a quantum property and can be shared amongst the electrons in a magnetic material like iron. For more info see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spin_%28physics%29
