English: Quick tour and demo of my modified Ludlum model 3 Geiger counter/ratemeter including information of modifications and demos with both my Ludlum 44-9 "pancake" probe and the modified cold-war era CDV-700 "pickle" probe.
As my friend Chris pointed out around 5:22 in the video I incorrectly state that most of the detected particles are alpha radiation this is most likely beta I'm detecting. Below is experiment data using the Ludlum M3 as a scaler with my laptop on the same plate with various paper shielding materials to demonstrate alpha blocking. That means we're probably mostly seeing beta particles since Uranium glassware is not known to be a significant emitter of gamma rays. It's also likely that in the last reading with the printer paper and stock note card I'm shielding some beta particles, too. - Background radiation, no sample: Avg CPM over 600 sec: 33.2 - Sample, no shielding: Avg CPM over 600 sec: 1731.7 - Printer paper sheet folded into 4 layers: Avg CPM over 600 sec: 1398.5 - 2x thin stock note card: Avg CPM over 600 sec: 1271.8 - 2x thin note cards folded in half + printer paper folded 4x: Avg CPM over 600 sec: 1045.6 |
