鏡餅

English: Kagamimochi is a set of two round rice cakes, smaller one on top of a larger one. In Japanese tradition, it is devoted for Buddha and Kami during the New Year. It is usually decorated from December 30 to January 15.

Kagami means a mirror which has been considered a symbol of Kami in Shinto. For some ritualistic reasons Kagamimochi shouldn't be cut with knives but broken with a hammer. On January 15 it is eaten as Shiruko, with sweet azuki (red bean) stew.

There are Mochi-related traditions and food in some other Asian countries.
