English: Hospice is a type of care and a philosophy of care which focuses on the palliation of a terminally ill patient's symptoms. These symptoms can be physical, emotional, spiritual or social in nature. The concept of hospice has been evolving since the 11th century. Then, and for centuries thereafter, hospices were places of hospitality for the sick, wounded, or dying, as well as those for travelers and pilgrims. The modern concept of hospice includes palliative care for the incurably ill given in such institutions as hospitals or nursing homes, but also care provided to those who would rather die in their own homes. It began to emerge in the 17th century, but many of the foundational principles by which modern hospice services operate were pioneered in the 1950s by Dame Cicely Saunders. Although the movement has met with some resistance, hospice has rapidly expanded through the United Kingdom, the United States and elsewhere.

Čeština: Hospic je zdravotnicko-sociální zařízení, které slouží k pobytu nevyléčitelně a těžce nemocných osob a péči o ně. Současná zdravotnická zařízení hospicového typu dostala své jméno podle instituce hospiců – míst pro odpočinek poutníků, která vznikla ve čtvrtém století.

Personalet er det kendte fra det traditionelle plejehjem - sygeplejersker, social- og sundhedsassistenter, social- og sundhedshjælpere, beskæftigelsesvejledere og fysioterapeuter, men i modsætning til det traditionelle plejehjem har man på et hospice mere fokus på omsorg og livskvalitet, og der planlægges i høj grad i samarbejde med den enkelte beboer.

Deutsch: Hospiz ( lat. hospitium „Herberge“) ist eine Einrichtung der Sterbebegleitung. Ein Hospiz verfügt meist über wenige Betten und ist ähnlich wie ein kleines Pflegeheim organisiert. In Deutschland gab es im Jahr 2007 151 stationäre Hospize, 139 Palliativstationen in Krankenhäusern und 1.450 ambulante Hospizdienste. Das erste Kinderhospiz in Deutschland entstand 1998.

Magyar: A hospice a súlyos betegségük végstádiumában levő, elsősorban daganatos betegek humánus, összetett ellátását jelenti multidiszciplináris csoport segítségével. Az ellátás célja a betegek életminőségének javítása: testi és lelki szenvedéseik enyhítése, fizikai és szellemi aktivitásuk támogatása, valamint a hozzátartozók segítése a betegség és a gyász terheinek viselésében. Az ellátásban orvosok, ápolók, gyógytornászok, pszichológusok/mentálhigiénikusok, szociális munkások, lelkészek, dietetikusok és képzett önkéntes segítők vesznek részt. A munkacsoport tagjai így komplex (testi, lelki, szociális, és spirituális) támaszt tudnak nyújtani.

На постсоветском пространстве эта проблема не решена, так как всё равно требует значительных вложений, получения лицензии на работу с наркотиками и т. п.

Simple English: Hospice is a type of medical treatment that helps take care of people who are very sick and have an illness that they will not be able to heal from. i.e. cancer, aids. People who use the hospice service will die soon, however sometimes they live longer and sometimes they get better. Hospice is different from other medicical treatments because it mostly tries to make people feel better instead of trying to cure them and make them healthy. Hospice allows people die with as much dignity and as painfree as possible.
