Summary
[edit]DescriptionMollusc shells on marine beach (Mullet Key, Tampa Bay, Florida, USA) 4.jpg |
English: Mollusc shells on a marine beach in Florida, USA (December 2012).
Several beaches along the Gulf of Mexico coast of southern Florida are famous for having an abundance of shells - they form moderately thick piles along the shoreline. The relative abundance and quality of shells varies from site to site and with weather & seasonal conditions. The shells shown above are 99% bivalves, but other organisms are also present. Ark clams are most common here, but I also see venus clams, scallop shells, and jewel box clams. Locality: Fort DeSoto Gulf Pier Beach - marine shoreline just north of the southwestern corner of Mullet Key, Fort DeSoto County Park, northwestern Tampa Bay, southwestern Florida, USA |
