Summary[edit]

Description
English: A.L. van Gendt, Volksgaarkeuken, Amsterdam, 1881. Collectie NAi, GEND t384

A.L. van Gendt, Public Soup-kitchen, Amsterdam, 1881. NAI Collection, GEND t384

This Amsterdam Public Soup Kitchen (Volksgaarkeuken) was a private initiative commissioned by a charitable foundation that established and ran public soup kitchens. In the late 19th century, journalists, educators, writers and doctors wrote about the poor nutrition of the great majority of the population. In their descriptions they mentioned a one-sided diet of rice, bread and potatoes and the unhygienic food preparation in a cupboard or cellar using polluted water. This Public Soup Kitchen was a mighty deed, meant to actively improve the population’s health by means of more varied nutrition, with fresh ingredients and clean drinking water.
