lly exist in the sky independent of the stars.Besides the lanes referred to, the photographs show a large nebulaapparently in a hole almost devoid of stars, from which one of thelanes runs away to the southeast for several degrees. The pictures seem to show that the brighter part of this nebula isonly a small portion of it, and that the nebula is feebly luminousover most of the vacancy; a longer exposure will perhaps prove thisto be true. The feebler portions of the nebula would almost suggestthe idea that a large nebula exists here, but that the major portionof it is dead or non-luminous, and that it actually causes the apparentvacancy by cutting out the light from the stars, while the few starsvisible are perhaps on this side of the nebula. I give this simply aswhat the picture would suggest to one, and not as what may re; llybe the truth. A NEBULOUS GROUNDWORK IN TAURUS 221 than the rest, as if a large planetary nebula were involved. This isso sharply defined, however, that I doubt its reality. For verificatonit must wait until the end of the year when more photographs canbe secured. The scale of the 6-inch plate is too small to aid in theverification. I have been slow in accepting the idea of an obscuring body toaccount for these vacancies; yet this particular case almost forcesthe idea upon one as a fact. There are portions of this apparentvacancy that are certainly darker than the adjacent sky. There isno question that this is real, and not a subjective effect, because, aswill be seen later, the dark lane running from it shows similarmarkings, which are certainly darker than the sky, and this is thecase with the lane itself. If we examine this lane, we shall findthat it comes to an abrupt
