Summary[edit]

Description

Scientists from the California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory Scientific Collaboration joined NSF Director France Córdova on Feb. 11, 2016, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., for a historic announcement: the first direct detection of gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of space-time, arriving at Earth from a cataclysmic event in the distant universe. The observation confirms Albert Einstein’s prediction made a century ago in his general theory of relativity. Read more in this special report.
