Scuola emiliana (?), Procne e Filomela portano al re Tereo la testa del figlio // Bologna Musei – Museo Civico d’Arte Industriale e Galleria Davia Bargellini

Sulla tavola imbandita e apparecchiata con una candida tovaglia frangiata, piatti di vetro e vasellame da pompa a terra, è servito un terribile pasto! Il soggetto rappresenta Procne e Filomela che portano al re Tereo la testa del figlio. Il mito racconta che a Tereo re dei Traci, grazie all’aiuto ch’egli ha dato ad Atene in una disputa territoriale, viene data in moglie Procne, dall’unione nasce Iti. Tereo si innamora di Filomela sorella di Procne e riesce a farla sua dopo aver nascosto la moglie e fatto credere a Filomena che la sorella fosse morta. Dopo aver violentato Filomela, Tereo le taglia la lingua affinché non riveli l’accaduto, ma ella riesce a raccontare alla sorella tutta la vicenda ricamandone le immagini su una tela.

Procne per vendetta uccide Iti e lo dà in pasto a Tereo mostrandogli la testa del fanciullo alla fine del terribile banchetto. Tereo sta per uccidere le sorelle ma gli dei tramutano Procne in rondine, Filomela in usignolo e Tereo in upupa.
