Summary[edit]

Description
English: J.Duiker, A.M. Bijvoet, Openluchtschool voor het gezonde kind, Amsterdam, 1927-1928. Collectie NAi. LEPP d28-3

J.Duiker, A.M. Bijvoet, Open-air school for the healthy child, Amsterdam, 1927-1928. NAI Collection. LEPP d28-3

The first open-air schools in the Netherlands were built outside the cities around 1905. Doctors sent physically and socially fragil children to an open-air school on the coast or in the woods for a cure of healthy food, medical care, physical activity and education in the open air. The conviction that fresh air is healthy for sick children prompted the idea that it would be beneficial for healthy children as well. Proceeding from this belief in the preventive effect, around 1930 open-air schools were established for healthy children as well.
