Summary[edit]
DescriptionHestskjær fyr i storm fra Nordvest.jpg |
Norsk bokmål: Hestskjær fyr i nordvest storm.
English: Hestskjær lighthouse in a northwestern storm. Hestskjær lighthouse is located in Averøy, Norway. A group of volunteers have taken responsibility for the lighthouse, which is situated in a difficult to reach area known for its rough weather conditions. Hestskjær lighthouse is the first and last lighthouse in Hustadvika (an ill-renowned stretch of sea in Norway). Families lived here from 1879 to 1960, when the Norwegian Coastal Administration built it's last lighthouse, the one with the flat roof in the image. The lighthouse was abandoned and automated in 1986. The lighthouse is 24 m tall. The skerry is 4 m tall, 150 m length and 100 m width.
Hestskjæret lighthouse was lighted for the first time on 1 november 1879. In 1883 a storm damaged the lighthouse to such an extent that it was out of service for three weeks. On 13 February 1944 the steamship DS «Irma» and the cargo ship «DS Henry» was sunk by Norwegian MTBs not far from Hæstskjæret lighthouse. The lighthouse was electrified in 1960. Camera location is estimated based on angle and this photo.
