Description |
English: In the early 1900s, halibut steamers made huge catches of fish. The record catch for a single day was 160,000 pounds. After the halibut were offloaded from the dories, the men chopped the heads off the fish, removed the livers for fish oil, and put everything on ice for the trip back to port.
This photo shows a group of fishermen cleaning halibut on board a steamer in the northern Pacific Ocean. It was probably taken on board the "Polaris" sometime between 1913 and 1927.
