Summary[edit]

Description

May 18, 2022

Galveston, Texas

An oil spill removal organization (OSRO) deploys fire boom as one of their required training evolutions. The yellow fire boom shown here is used to corral and concentrate spilled oil into a thick patch so that it can be ignited and removed in a tactic known as in situ burning. This particular type of fire boom is water cooled so that it can sustain the high temperatures generated from a burn. During the burn operation, cold water is continually pumped through the yellow boom. This cooling effect combined with the durability of the boom’s material preserve it so that it can be used multiple times. BSEE Preparedness Analysts from the Oil Spill Preparedness Division (OSPD) regularly inspect these types of equipment and observe industry training and exercise activities to ensure compliance with regulations and to monitor the overall vigor of the oil spill preparedness and response community.
