Figure showing the results of computer simulations, showing the bias in 1-step adaptation due to a bias in mutational origination

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Denoting the two outcomes of adaptation as "left" (higher u) and "right" (higher s), the left/right ratio of outcomes is shown here as a function of mutation bias B. For N from 100 to 10000, the bias in outcomes is close to the origin-fixation approximation B/K. For higher N, the outcome bias is not as great, yet the lines all ascend past the point where "left" is the favored outcome. The selection coefficients are 0.02 (right) and 0.01 (left), thus K = 2. The higher mutation rate (left) is fixed at 1E-5, whereas the lower rate (right) varies over three orders of magnitude according to the value of B. Vertical bars represent the standard error, calculated from the binomial error as per Yampolsky and Stoltzfus (2001).
