Allow overwriting of File:Chris Martin signature (vector).svg

User:Relayed has kindly vectorized the signatures of Coldplay's band members after I requested them. However, I found out how to vectorize images myself today and I have managed to create new versions that are less distorted in comparison to the original PNG file. Just finished uploading the new versions and replacing the PNGs that were still being used in a few international versions of Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did! This is a "just in case" request because things may change later. I'd like to overwrite both files because the two nations have recently established diplomatic relations (proof: https://x.com/adoniaayebare/status/1792635830743228570) but it seems that the creator has forgotten about editing the files by turning each respective country blue while I reminded him to do so. The file does not show the full painting and is cropped on all but the right side of it. I would like to overwrite it with a full image of the painting provided by the museum on its website. I don't think the arbitrarily cropped image of this painting is of any useful purpose. ADTkocz (talk) 16:05, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

I'm still inclined to decline the request, even though I'd agree a crop is suboptimal since overwriting with the full image would not be a minor change. I'd recommend uploading your version as a new file. Abzeronow (talk) 17:29, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

These are both highly visible maps that are used to illustrate areas where Russian language is the majority language or "a minority language". Both show Mongolia, I wish to amend that (per my previous request, which was archived without a resolution): Commons:Overwriting_existing_files/Requests/Archive_5#Allow_Overwriting_of_File:Idioma_ruso.PNG. According to Arefyev 2012, the source used by Ethnologue, 40%+ of the population spoke Russian. (Chinneeb says that Ethn. doesn't mention Russian, but I just checked the latest edition, and it still does.) It may be that the younger generations don't know Russian, but I would think you could still get around Mongolia pretty well with it. There are other countries that we show on the PNG map that have less Russian than Mongolia, so it would be weird to remove Mongolia but not them.

Chinneeb, do you have sources to the contrary?

Specifically, Ethn. cites Arefyev as saying there are 1,196,000 L2 speakers of Russian in Mongolia, and (according to the WP-en article on the demographics of Mongolia), the population in 2012 was 2,867,744, which works out to 42% L2 speakers. But we'd need to check Arefyev (2012) to know how old his data was; it's presumably older than 2012, but we don't know by how much from the mention in Ethn. Older data would mean a higher %age at the time, since the population of Mongolia would've been smaller then, but also more time for the younger, non-Russia-speaking generations to grow in numbers.
